I've found two suggestions; one video, demonstrating how to slam the pod with glass down onto a solid surface with quite a bit of force causing the mirror glass to fall out; a second was a description involving threading a couple of tie wraps around the back of the mirror as close to the socket as possible, and then using a screwdriver under the tie wraps to apply the upward pressure to the back of the mirror glass to pop out the mirror. I haven't tried the first one for the simple reason that I'm afraid I'll break the glass. I am trying the second, but, applying a lot of pressure is not resulting in any indication at all that the ball is popping out of the socket.

I've seen some other references to people doing this with the mirror still installed on the bike. Are there any other suggestions about how to make the thing pop out?

Welcome Claudejones. I tried to replace the broken glass on my bike...using various techniques...all failed. A new glass was cut by a window supplier and they used a combination of double sided tape and silicon to attach. If the glass is broken it may no longer be absolutely flat...hence the silicon and tape. Good luck.

My understanding is that there is a ball on the back of the mirror and it plugs into a tight socket in the housing, the ball in socket allowing free rotation of the glass to adjust the angle. How to pop that ball out of the socket is my question. I have tried a suggestion on the forum from an earlier post of looping a couple of tie-wraps around the glass as close to the socket below as possible, and then putting a screw driver or similar under the looped tie wraps and lifting, but the ball wouldn't pop out of the socket. That leads me to believe that the other technique suggested on this forum, shown in a video, which is to hold the housing so the glass is facing down, and just pounding the whole thing downward on a hard surface - in the video the glass pops right out, but given the force I was exerting using the tie wrap method, I don't see how this second technique could work in my case. This is a 27 year old bike and I sort of doubt the mirror glass has ever been removed before because I got the bike with very low mileage so there could be some corrosion or similar issue at play.

I had a real hard one and made it easier by getting some WD40 into the ball joint and then working it around till it was a bit free and then got a piece of 20mm x 3mm steel with a 60deg bend 20mm from the end and worked it under the mirror then when on the edge of the ball socket twisted the lever and it came off.
It worked for me but the usual disclaimer applies.

yep wd40 or rp7 could be an aid at releasing the ball well at least lubricating it .....the ball has 2 ears that keep it horizontally from turning ...

the cable ties worked well for me ...

I removed my mirror from the pod by putting it face down on a felt pad and donking the back of the pod with a rubber mallet. It worked fine for me. My first attempt at trying to lever it out resulted in the usual breaking of the mirror.

Wow, four replies from Australia! Thanks to all - I'm going to try the WD40 and rubber mallet combination - the carpet in my office should be an excellent surface to try it on as it's short and stiff fiber, but soft enough to provide a little 'give' when I pound.

That's the one I spoke of finding in my first post. I wasn't too thrilled about trying that one. I managed to get it out using the tie-wrap method by spraying some WD40 penetrating oil in behind the glass first - it popped right out after that

Used the same WD40 lubricant spray into the area behind the mirror glass, then, two tie-wraps looped behind the mirror on either side of the ball and pulling; this extracted my broken mirror without much effort. Pushed the new mirror ball into its socket and all is well - Thanks for all the suggestions
