Hey folks!

I recently acquired a 1990 K100LT and decided to make a profile here after lurking here for several weeks.

I'm new to BMW and new to riding altogether. The k100 is one heavy beast of a first bike! I live in Atlanta, GA, USA and have several BMW riding friends. I'm planning a trip across the US and I've got a lot to do between now and then. Pictures of the bike coming soon.

When I'm not soaking up everything I can learn on motorcycles, I design sound effects and music for a living. I also do a bit of filmmaking and hope to document this upcoming trip.

Cheers!

Welcome Georgiak
ride it as much as you can and you will start to feel comfortable.
Always be aware where you park, I nearly lost it in a pump station driveway with a slope on it. They have a terrible lean on the side stand , so do some work on those thigh muscles.
Good luck with it

Hi GeorgiaK,
Yep the K can feel a bit top heavy at walking pace. A firm hand (or legs) is required. I too keep a close eye on ground levels when using the side stand. Enjoy the bike and welcome.
Cheers, dee why

Welcome GeorgiaK sounds like the trip of a lifetime. You will have to start a thread and post plenty of pics you know, we enjoy others trips almost as much as our own.

Greetings from the Emerald Isle! Sounds like a wonderful trip you're planning GeorgiaK. If you do document it I hope you'll share your reports on the forum for those of us abroad.

There's no denying the high Centre of Balance and weight of the K but they're are still very manageable. I don't know what height you are but there are options such as a low profile seat. I'm about 5'10" and I can balance it no problem with two up. I have learned the technique for how to pick it up properly (yes I too have embarrased myself with a little drop for the audience!) if it goes over and I'm always wary of chosing my parking spot. Pushing back uphill on tip-toes is not easy or in deep gravel for that matter. I always try to choose a spot carefully and use the centre stand as they smoke for a a bit (normal) arfter being parked on the side stand.

Riding wise once you get a couple of hundred miles under your belt neither the weight not centre of gravity will be an issue. In fact I wouldn't go back to a cruiser style having had the K for less than a year.

Enjoy the foum, lots of help on here to get you ready for the road trip.

Hi GeorgiaK looking forward to reading about your trip. When new to riding K's and any other big bike it is really important to think through the process of stopping and how you will start off again regardless of where you are. Many a guy and gal has dropped their bike in a gas station because of spilled diesel or oil or put their foot down on dust or sand and had it slide away, BTDT as they say Embarassed
Regards,
K-BIKE
