Hi!

I want to buy a 1991-er BMW K100RS 16V. The bike is now fully satine black.

How can i find out what colour was the original paint, without sanding the paint off?

It is exist a website, or i must ask from a BMW dealer or the BMW AG Munich?

Thanks for any answer!

I already did, but there are many color in this year and I do not know what was on my bike...

The bike was imported from Italy, has 80T km on the buckle, and in good condition, the owner is 70 years old...

Post the VIN (or PM it to me) and tomorrow at work I will 'run' the VIN through the BMW computer and tell you the production date (the actual day), original colour, intended market, option codes, and possibly how much the salesman made on commission.

Follow this link, it will give you some idea what colours were used for that year, alternately in the motor trade they normally remove the fuel tank cap and check for original colour on the inside as it can be touched up easily and not visible

Bazsimoci,
your bike is a 2nd month of '91 production, intended for the Italian market, came with option codes for pannier mounts and an engine spoiler from the factory, is rated at 74kw, has or had engine number 10912103, and was originally painted number 678, Perlsilber metallic.

Halo,
your bike is a Feb, '84 model, was intended for the Aussie market, had an accessory socket and extended rear mudguard and hazard warning flashers as options, is rated at 66kw, the engine number is no longer in the data, and it was painted number 605, Madison metallic.

Ainsjac,
your motorbike is a 10th month of '83, an Aussie model, was painted number 575, Rot (red) metallic, is rated at 66kw, and might have been a 'plain Jane' K100 from the model code.

Many thanks Guest.....I have to be careful, my bike is a "plain Jane" and my wife's name is Jayne.....must not mix the two up. Did you make any sense of that other set of codes?

Mate, if you married her surely she is not one who would be considered 'plain'.

As for the additional numbers, since the bike is fast fading into the past, BMW will often delete any superfluous numbers data from the listing. It is most likely an engine or gearbox number....but I am running it through as we speak to see if I can glean any new info for you.

Nuh, nothing there that sheds light on those numeros. Check your engine number, right hand side of the engine block, near the ribbed 'oil pan' area and compare. Except this group of numbers '0100483' is the actaul date the bike was made...the 4th of October, 1983.

Thank you Guest...kind of BMW to put a sticker on the bike with the date of completion. The other number doesn't line up with the engine number...possibly some internal code to say where the bike is destined?
Will catch up with you in a few weeks time at the gathering in Qld..

Nino,
your bike is a 10/1983 plain Jane K100 that was supplied from Berlin factory number 31 rated at 66kw, painted Rot Metallic number 575, with pannier mounts and luggage grid, front chrome engine protection guards and an accessory clock. The salesman at selling dealer number 00030 made 50 Deutsche Marks on motorbike order number 00199038 for his troubles.

Nino, your bike and mine must be brothers.....maybe twins as they were born in the same month and are the same colour. Does your bike have a sticker on the bar opposite where the vin plate sits ? If it does the date of completion of the bike may be there.

Nino,
it's generally acknowledged that except for a very few 5th month of 1982 models, probably well-into-final-phases-test mules and the like, the 'real' start of production of the Mighty K occured around the 4th month of 1983. Yours will have been one of thousands produced already.

Hi!

I bougth the K100RS yesterday, and i rode it on wheels to home.

At this night came my brother, and we looking the owners handbook. My brother said, that on the drawing in the OH seems the bike otherwise, then my RS. Today i look around on the net, searching pictures about this difference.

Somebody had the side cover of the later K1100 installed.

Have you ever seen anyone with such a conversion?

I keep this part now, and maybe later i will buy 2 original side cover...

Well Guest you may live to regret making this offer! I have an ex police 1991 LT vin 0191428. my third ex police bike. I would love to know what info you can supply on this. Were they supplied to the forces already for service or are they standard bikes moded in the UK to suit local requirements?
Have now done a couple of hundred miles on it since purchase and think its the bee's knees. John

I can only tell you what dealer number ordered it and for which market it was intended. How the purchaser intended to use it or modify it is beyond the scope of the VIN exploration. I'll check the VIN for useful info on Tuesday when I return to work.
Cheers.

Colour preference is totally subjective. I submit that perhaps the previous owner might have wanted to cover up a faded and dishevelled original paint with an easy spray-over of matt black. From here it looks quite sleek and stealthy. If your wife paid for the motorbike she should have a say in the matter. But if she did not.......

Matt black is the new red!

Your bike's VIN turns up that is was intended as a K100LT Authorities bike for the English marketplace, came with Pirelli tyres as standard, had an 'official' speedo, sport suspension, high windscreen, was painted number 607 Polizeiweiss, had a chrome front engine protection bar, a 'bucket' seat, and lists something they call a 'twistgrip brake', and had engine number 01912103 and gearbox number 0084625AAP.

There you go, all dressed up and with an obligation of many tickets to write to pay for itself.

Thank you for taking the time to check my bike out. It now has a dual jell? seat, no idea who the manufacture is, but very comfortable. The twistgrip brake is a knurled screw and spring under the twist grip that creates friction on the twistgrip drum and holds the throttle in a fixed position. Does a civilian model have a throttle that snaps shut when you let go of the twist grip and I wonder what they mean by sport suspension? John

Two Wheels Better

They should have just called it a throttle friction screw, common on BMWs of that era, standard on Airheads from the '70s. Sport suspension comes from the K75S. Look for a telltale 'S' stamped into the metal fork top caps. It's a much firmer suspension with less travel, each fork leg performing a single task, and may require less fork oil, usually only 280cc. I retrofitted them to my '87 K100RS. Gel seat is normally how it's spelt.

Putting the number into the bimmer.work site gives a K100LT made on 1 November 1990, as a police model For England in Police White (Polizeiweiss 607)

If you go to that site yourself you'll get some extra details on what it came supplied with. I think the twist grip brake referred to is the throttle friction screw. The rest is pretty self explanatory.
