Really glad that key works. Lot to spend just to make your key ring heavier and more inconvenient to find the key you actually want.

On an unrelated note, just opened a bottle of wine. Had to look for the cork screw.

I have bought a #49 but none of the others fit I need a 56, 65 & 44.
I might be able to work it so I can lock them on and secure 1 lock on each case while I look for the other keys.
I may borrow some and make my own.

Rick, I have some brass and a 044.....and some time. I will have a go at making a couple of 044s. Found out that the key has to be that long in order to clear the rest of the lock casing.
Last time I tried this the little dremel wheel slipped and my left thumb became a softer option than the brass.

Well, I have tried again and every time I get it down to the right thickness and the groove is kind of straight I try it.
Most times it will bend or twist....do it three times and it breaks. I wonder if all brass is the same and whether heat from the cutting wheel is too hot and weakens the brass in the thinnest places. All you need is a little resistence and I fail.
Rick my 044 cost me about $12 Aus. landed here from the Boxer Man in the UK. Even when we don't get mail here every day it took exactly one week to get here.
There you have it from a member of the key club.

Harder to cut, but the advantage is that it isn`t so brittle as brass is.

i think we have some 1.6mm stainless around here (at work ) stan, ill try and send you some huh ?

better pm me your address

but to my way of thinking , if you have the key cut depths correct there should be little resistance of the lock going between open, closed (the action ) ...if your bending keys then this might be the reason why it is hard, try taking a little off the nose of the first bump or make a slight v in the height of that bump to clear the cam trigger

the width ...or is that depth of that nose section will be important also as it will fit inside the guides / cam mechanism ...if it were too wide it would bind

Looking at the jagged edges you should rephrase that as 'I think I will cut myself...just in case'

I have a 063 spare if anyone needs it. It is a copy (Eureka Locksmiths Dubbo circa 1810), but it works fine.

I'm looking for a 049 key. The key that came with my K75 City Cases is a 046, which doesn't fit. Anyone out there know where I can get this? I've tried some of the Ebay links in this thread but none have 049.

Thanks.

Thanks to Inge and Charlie for supplying an idea and the stainless steel for the key. Once you cut the blanks, it is easy to experiment with different nicks and filing until it works. Perhaps a closeup photo gallery is the way to go.

Rob I bought a 49 from a guy in Germany and its in the post so there is hope. I need to make a copy of it for myself and can make another or will scan both sides with some measurements and send ASAP. I still need a 56 and 65 if there are any out there.

Heh Rick, if you can make a copy for me at the same time you make one for yourself (when it arrives of course), that would be ideal. I'll pay for whatever it costs to duplicate and mail. PM me if you can help. Was the guy in Germany S.Meyer?

I'll reference the photo and my 046 key to see how they match up. Do the teeth on the key matter at all? Throughout this discussion, it seems that only the position of the grooves is the discerning factor whether a key works or not.

Just thinking (dangerous I know) about these keys If anybody out there in K land has these keys would you please either take a photo of both sides or scan both sides (prefer a scan as that gives scale) then send me the scanned docs to my email which is with each of my posts. that way I can put it togetherin one file and have Bert put it in the Downloads section for all to see.

rob ...yes the profile is the main component of the key structure

the tooth section near the end of the key operates the latch ...so on that section it is really important to get it right

the main problem is getting blanks to make a dulication

i have visited several high end lockmiths and no luck yet

good luck

Well this is interesting.
I was just checking my keys again and the lock numbers. I have a 063 and 051.
So the key shown as 063 in my earlier post (page 1) will only open the 063 lock.
The key from Eureka Locksmiths Dubbo works perfect in BOTH locks.
Emails sent Rick with profile shots.

063

And the key that fits the 051 lock AND the 063 lock

Hope that this helps those looking for pannier keys.
I have just ordered a new 048 key from James Sherlocks in the UK.
Not cheap at £14.40 but having a key must double the value of a set of panniers.
As they say, while stocks last. But I've got mine!

Hi all, I missed all the keyman fun on this thread up until this week when Charlie directed me here while I was looking for an 057 key for BobW as I wan't on the forum back then.

My set of panniers has 056 & 057 and I have posted photos below. As those numbers were mentioned the photos may help someone.

I noted that the profile of these two numbers are a mirror image of each other.

Cheers

Two possibilities to solve your search.

1) contact Larry "Stoner" Stonestreet of Stoner's Beemer Stash, Airhead Parts and Accessories
Larry Stonestreet
39628 Avenida Miguel Oeste
Murrieta, CA 82563
CA.STONER@YAHOO.COM
951-813-1704

I emailed him to find out if he had a 049 for me and he did.  You might luck out.

Also try James Sherlock

OR

2) get a local locksmith to manufacture a key.  That's what I did this week. I dropped off my bags, a copy of a 046 pannier key that I had and pictured of the 049 key I desired. One day later, the locksmith called to say my three keys were finished. Cost me $10 per key which I though was OK given the work he put into the milling and grinding.

He used an Ilco 01122C blank and milled the based on the info he had as well as the lock.  He said that having the loch was better than having the 046 key although that helped to speed the process of shaping the tooth profile.

I've tested the keys and they work.

Question though.  I need only turn the lock mechanism on my City Cases barely 20 degrees in either direction to lock/unlock.  Is this correct?

hmmm, looking at that 057 above and the 069 further above, they look nearly the same except for the grooves! I appreciate the photos, and I bet I can make a key for myself!

taking pictures with a ruler next to them is very helpful, thanks! (says he with no keys to offer the collective)

cheers!

well a big thanks to all of you who have posted pictures and added observations to this thread, I was able to make my 057 key from a piece of brass bar stock I saved from my Grandfather's stash 20 years ago. He worked for Cole Key company and also helped design the typical key cutting machine we all see everywhere. He had already used this piece of brass for making what looked like another key, but I only cut a small corner from the prize and look what it got me!!   Very Happy

I wanted to add that the important part of this key is the first cm, the rest in the pictures has nothing to do with the latch (it may have some part in other locks on the bike, but I haven't seen what) So when making a key the only part that matters is the end profile and the little notched bit at the very bottom.

It works a treat and I'm very happy to have locks on my bags again!! thanks to the collective intelligence!

You must have completed your key on a Sunday...hence a "holy" key.

Thanks.
I have two 049 keys - could possibly get a couple cut locally.  Not sure what postage to Canada would cost from UK though.  Idea

Thanks Krambo. I appreciate the offer. I had also inquired of a BMW used parts dearler in California and found that he ahd a copy of a 049 key. In the end, I had a local Toronto locksmith manufacture 3 copies of a 049 based on photographs. They work great, and that's the whole point after all; now I can lock my panniers and secure them to the bike.
