Recently acquired bike.

Went deep into the hills of Kentucky to get it. Researched the 89 K100rs here on this site. Thanks for the great knowledge and dedication for helping others along!

Many miles are on it. Over 100k. Don't care. It seems happy. Me too.

Have found that it's terrible for doing errands though. Seems like what was a 15 min. trip to the hardware store now can be 2 hrs or so. Laughing
Alright! There it is.

Would appreciate some advice as to possibly plastic welding some small cracks in the panniers which have obviously been repaired before and it isn't holding....and am keeping a very close eye on to see if the cracks are spreading.

Regards,
Jim

Welcome JimK from a northern neighbor. I have had some success with plastic repairs using JB Weld (grey) and cloth tape, like doing fiberglass. You will want to do this on the inside of the pannier and in thin layers building up and widening with each. Gets to be quite strong. If the crack is continuing to grow, I have found drilling a small hole at the end of the crack will relieve the stress and stop the crack (usually), then patch. Couple good errands for you to go on Smile

Welcome Jim
I always throw in 60 miles or so when I just have to do something local, can't seem to waste a good engine warm up. Then I have to explain the time away, but you know it's an old bike dear, musn't work her too hard etc etc.
Do you have a long riding season where you are?
Regards RT

Good luck with the bike. I too find excuses to extend the local spin. A wise friend I used to ride to for coffee and a chat said to me in the early days of my K ownership, "soon coming here won't be enough for you"

Welcome,

There was a recent thread about plastic welding. Cant remember who posted it but he used an old fan from a computer as the plastic for the weld. Use the search function to try and find it, good info.

the panieers are an "abs type plastic" ....

the fan is a thermo plastic and is good for the "hard plastics " found on some of the mirror pods and the like

i have seen some repairs to panieers with what appears to be a "rubber based solution" but long term doesnt work too well .

havent found a solution yet ...but still looking

having a look on the net ...there seems to be solutions but the releveant links might be found when searching for "plastic welding "

it seems that a fair amount of experience is required

Try to find a company specialized in plastic welding and gluing.
They will do few tests on the plastic and will sell you the adequate product.
If you use the wrong glue, it will be very difficult to fix it after because the material will be soiled.
I don't think searching the internet will give you a concrete answer unless you find somebody with experience of this specific type of plastic.
About 10 years ago we had the same problem with a piece of machinery in a school's workshop. We tried all kinds of glue, but nothing worked. We finally took the part to a specialized company and they sold us the right product. The repair lasted for ever.
I will try to contact them and see if I can bring my saddle bags (even if they don't need repair).

Thanks for the kind welcome folks.

Having trouble with sending some things.

4th attempt Smile...Hmmm... smiley emoticons are messing with me, I think. Smile

Can drive the bike but the forum is having some fun with me. Probably is operator headspace. Smile

You guys are great!

Evening's homework assignment includes reading other stuff regarding new members, posting and avatar maintenance. Smile

Now am going to haul ass away from here and figure out things.

Appreciate the helping with thoughts concerning the panniers. Jim 89 k100rs.

I am fixing some nasty gouges in a BMW pannier at the moment with the Plastex repair kit. Have been using the stuff for about three years and have fixed all sorts of plastic bits and pieces with it. It is easy to use and you can even build up pieces that are missing. Will post some photos of my repaired sidecovers.

welcome Jim , I too am a newbie to the forum, and am enjoying the offerings of the site. Good to see so many interested people in K100's.
With regards to the plastics , are the panniers similar in type to canoes and kayaks, your avatar brought this thought on , maybe theres food for thought there. Very Happy Shocked Smile Question bugger, why not just add a few smileys.
Yes mate I too am learning the ropes of this site.Ed

In for a dime, In for a dollar.
Let's see how this works. Have experienced some probs posting, I think because of some timing out issues at my end.

kfilipow...copy on jb weld and building up from within and drilling hole to relieve stress/stop crack from progressing.

RT, Rick G, (hope the hand is better soonest), 88KE, Blakey, Amster, caferacer62, charlie99, Mr. Frog, Krambo, K-bike, and vlsuzuki, thanks for the welcome.

On fixing the panniers:
Have all the info kindly offered.
Thanks.

Yeah, both the seayaks that I run on the Ohio River when the waves are up, (that's what they are made for, rough water) are PE, Polyethylene and know others that fix that material or would show me how to however have been told that abs is a different animal and shall research that.
Good idea, though, Ed.
