hi,

I want to lower my sitting position 3-4 cms (and NOT touch rear absorber).

I am wondering if the regular seat can be given to an upholster to redo or perhaps the lower seats I have been reading about have a DIFFERENT frame somehow?

Any one ever tried it?

Thank you,
Roy

Yes.

If you want to try it yourself, remove the cover by drilling out the pop rivets. For best results, hook up some nickasil wire to a Weller soldering gun - some call this a "hot wire" - and scoop out as much foam as you wish. You can do the same with a sharp knife or razor, but it's tough to scoop it just right and you may end up with Princess & the Pea Syndrome.

If removing only a few centimeters, the cover should re - fit well.

However, if appearance is important to you, and the risk to cost ratio doesn't suit you, an upholsterer can do a neat job. You might want to be present for the foam scooping to get a custom fit to your derriere.

hi,
hi Damun,

this work i cannot do.

I will try an upholster - just that it seems that there is not that much material there to take out and i warry that seat will get even harder. this is why i asked if lowered seats have a different frame /construction.

tnx

Hi Roy,
There is a low seat which is a standard seat for K Bikes mine came with one and these drop the ride height a fair bit. The tools get relocated to the rear compartment and the freed up space becomes the space the seat lowers into. My bike was/still is fitted with one.

hi,

sorry for being so dense but so are you saying that
A) your lowered seat is a std seat that has been lowered or
B) that there is a seat that is lower by having a different construction that it is the std lower seat for these bikes AND that a regular seat can not be lowered in such a way because its frame is different?

tnx
Roy

Yes a BMW low seat has a different structure.
As K-Bike said you have to remove the tool box under the seat to make room for the different design. you will need the seat + a different set of hardware.
The side panels are integrated with the low seat and you will have to remove yours
The lock is also different as the low seat slide onto the frame and is not on hinges as a regular one.
I don't know if a low seat exists for the 85 model. All the ones that I saw are for 1986 and up. The difference between the 1985 and 1986 + is the shape of the cowl.

hi,

OK now I understand. So I will add buying lower seat to my less-urgent things to do.

These German engineers must really be tall - I am 181cm and do not feel 100% sure with leg contact.

BTW: I am in step 15 (I kid you not) of the 19 steps necessary to get my bevel box thru customs + MOT + postal services.

it is an amazing story of a bureaucracy gone mad – post office, customs and MOT do not talk with each other – I need to pass silly documents between them - they have no idea what or why they are doing what they are doing yet they rule.

Thank you,
Roy

Hi Roy,

Off topic but re bureaucracy I just had a flash back to "The Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy" but at least it is only? 4 steps away.

Phil

I just come back from a BMW rally and we were talking about "The Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy".
