I have two '84 vintage K100RS. On the older of the two, the digital read out of the clock is fine, but it is unlit at night. On the more recent of the two, the digital clock lights up fine, but the the LCD has a couple of dead cells. I have a third clock in a spare instrument cluster with a non working speedo that is a known good clock.
There would seem to be the opportunity to make two good clocks out of the available parts. Number one, how does one remove and replace the digital clock?
Number two, how are they lit and would it be possible to remove the light from the clock with the defective read out and put it in the clock with a good read out but no light? Thanks in advance for any help.

Just did mine. Easy. Clocks a back lit. Replace the globe

Remove the whole unit from the housing.

Remove the three screws from each of the face plates. This will make them loose. Depending how brave you are or how dextrous that may be all you need.
The clock has a black mounting/locking ring that is square. It has a lip that sits under each of the speedo and tachometer face plates.
Remove the ring, plastic and easy to break and the clock just slips out.
Reverse to fit the new clock.
Replace any blown globes while there.
Just plug in the wires, turn on the key and list and see which need replacing.

+1 To the clocks being back lit..... Took me about 18 months of ownership to find that one out and replace the bulb!

Rossco, I had that square black surround off the clock. Which way do you pull the clock after removing that surround? Don't assume this is obvious to me, it is not. I don't want to start yanking on things and do damage. So there are replaceable lights behind the clock? This is good news.

Go to the forums download section and get a copy of the Clymer manual. It gives a step by step procedure for working on the instrument cluster. Really easy once you know which connectors and screws to loosen. I just did mine.

If you remove the LCD face before replacing it clean the area with a soft white pencil eraser it does a good job and it fairly gentle on the surface and then try to avoid touching the surface as even finger prints can start corosion going.
If you do need new clocks they are available from a guy on US Ebay.

Hi Mason. If you have removed the black plastic surround, then at the base of the clock, left and right, top and bottom are small plastic tangs holding the clock in place. Gently remove from one side and then the other and gently remove upwards - there are two female connectors on the back of the clock that those long male pins go into, which can bend easily. Then its easy to access the bulb underneath for replacement. New clock just pushes down on the pins and click into place with the 4 plastic tangs ( I guesss they are called tangs! ) and replace the black surround - done!
