Killarney Run Img_1110

Heading west to Killarney for the week and my car has crapped out so doing it on the bike in nice easy stages, less than 100 miles today and holed up in a nice little hostelry overlooking The Gold Coast (You Brissy boys didn't think you had the only one did ya 👅).

I was a beautiful spring day here with temperatures about 11-12c. I stopped plenty along the way to rest .....took this pic of a moody evening sky in New Ross...
Killarney Run Img_1113

The place was deserted......like everybody had emigrated! This is the Dunbrody Famine Ship an exact replica of the original ship built in 1845 the year the Great Famine broke out. It carried thousands of people to North America during the subsequent years.
Killarney Run Img_1112

Will head on west through Cork city tomorrow, hopefully hook up with Olaf for a coffee. I might even go via Lismore and post a pic to cheese off the NSW folks Razz

I didn't think it would be long before you were up and at it, you just can't hold a good man down.
Just looking at that ship makes me want to go sailing.

En route to our meet up I detoured off the main road into the town of Youghal...
Killarney Run Yougha10

I rode on to the Capital of the south and enjoyed a long leisurely chat over lunch. Departing the west side of Cork city in the rain I ran into blue skies again after about 10 miles. The road from Cork to Killarney is a joy for biking with great twisties and stunning scenery. I did a quick dismount in the town of Macroom to streatch the legs and admire the architecture....

En route to Killarney, just after crossing the county line, you round sweeping right hand bend a bend and the mastic mountains of "The Kingdom" appear in a most surprising and dramatic way, letting you know you are in the rugged Beauty of the country's highest range "The Magillacuddy Reeks". The road continues to entertain with a swirling ribbon of tarmac along the valley floor until, all to quickly, you arive at the outskirts of the town.

I will be based in Killarney for the week and will take another route home wiith, hopefully more pics to follow.

Hi 88,
Great pics, I must visit your country before I get too old.
Was 'Cafe Muesli' a reference to your new diet? ( I actually like muesli )

Cheers,

Good to see you back on the road 88. If I had seen post earlier I could have met you as you passed my way. Visit the Flying boat museum (if open) in Foynes on the way home through Listowel Athea Glin etc. Nice run into Limerick.

Finally getting around to posting some pics from the return jounney. I came home via the midlands to visit some friends and a loop over the Slieve Bloom mountains for old times sake made for a fantastic route home.

heres the route...
Google Map

I'll let the pictures do most of the talking...

Rain hail and shine on leaving Kerry...
Killarney Run Dscf0428
Bad motorway pile up kept me here for a hour or more...
Killarney Run Dscf0429

Got cold and hungry so parked up for the night in Roscrea.

Next morning dawned bright and sunny perfect for the route I had in mind.

Slieve Bloom...
Killarney Run Dscf0430

Narrow twisting track with good surface 1st and 2nd gear corners on the climb..
Killarney Run Dscf0431

Old lime Kiln Chimney...
Killarney Run Dscf0432

County Line...
Killarney Run Dscf0433

Top o' the morning....
Killarney Run Dscf0435

Upland peat bog, Wildlife (flora and fauna) reserve...
Killarney Run Dscf0434

Looking towards home (the misty hills, feint on the horizon)..
Killarney Run Dscf0436

The road from Mountrath to Abbeyleix and on to Carlow was superb and virtually empty. I didn't stop for any more pictures as I was enjoying the bends too much.

Arrived home with just under 500 miles on the clock which was reading 79,999 and felling very alive and glad to be so Very Happy
