After a late night discussion on a pub balcony last night I appear to be the new owner of a one owner Red 16v K100RS.

I've been asking the owner for years, last night he finally said "yes, come and get it"

What year, I don't know.  How many kms, I can't remember.  What I do know is that it was running well when it was parked, had no problems. The paint was very badly UV affected. I think it has a set of fairly new panniers fitted. He bought an R1200GS Adventure and just stopped riding the K.  I'm guessing a fair bit of TLC before getting it running and then start replacing parts as required

I guess I'm picking it up next weekend sometime.  Still have to nut out those details.

Al

Nah, just always wanted a 16v 100RS and I've known this bike for a long time and knew that eventually he would sell it, I made my interest known years ago.

If/When the sidecar and bike get painted it will definitely be NotRed, but I haven't decided which shade of NotRed yet.

Going to pick it up in the morning.

So far I know:
-One owner, never dropped or smashed
-Almost new panniers
-170,000kms
-forks serviced before it came off the road
-driveshaft etc replaced at about 110,000kms
-leaky front master cyl
-No ABS fitted
-seat cover cracked

It was running fine he just parked it and never rode it again.  He was going to try and get it started, I've asked him not to, I'll clean the fuel system first before trying to get it running.

Will put some pics up when I get it home.

Al

These two pics are good enough to show the bike overall:

Front view
K100RS-16v Webfront_zpsc2b3e3fe

rear view:
K100RS-16v Web2_zpse3ffe7d2

First job is to strip and clean the fuel system.  The stale fuel stinks.  The bike has no brakes at this stage, and the back caliper is sticky.  Thankfully its not fitted with ABS so it will make this a fairly straight forward job to fix.

But, it's all there, nothing missing.  So a really good place to start from.

195,000kms.  The bike was Procycles shop demonstrator, then bought in '93 by the guy I bought it from.

I'll post a pic later but I've found something strange, the brake pedal seems to be delaminating like a piece of rotten timber, which is odd when it appears to be an alloy casting.

Anyway, first job, try and get it to start once I've checked out the fuel system.  There is no rush.

Al

The red metallic was always a bad choice here if you didn't have covered parking and had to park outside.  Most of them ended up looking like a poor attempt at an R90S paintjob.  This one is closer to pink than red. The silver wheels are back to a chalky white in places.

Stage 1, its running.  Needs a battery but with the spare tank fitted and the aid of a booster battery it starts and runs fine.

Now to start making a list of parts needed.

I thought about the rear wheel centre too. Should it not have a belly pan? I also thought that ABS was a standard fit on a 16 valve.

The belly pan wasn't standard fitment in Australia (each countries importer has a say in what is to be fitted to the bikes they import, BMW Aus chose not to have the bellypan fitted).

Also in Aus (a small market comparatively) BMW chose to import the 16v in red, white and black only, no other colours .  The Classic Black ones and Pearl white ones have ABS, I've never seen a red one with ABS in this country.

Al, Charlies right about European rear brake levers.
This isn't unusual with our salty winters in England.

K100RS-16v Sam_0514

Strange that it doesn't seem to affect gear levers?; I've never seen (or had) a corroded one.

Paul.

Mine is nothing like as bad as the one in that pick. Just delaminating a bit along the shaft of the pedal.  Never seen it before.

Once I start pulling the brakes apart, I'll know what I need. Thanks for the offer, I'll keep it in mind.

Battery tomorrow so I can start it without jumper leads then front brakes are the first job.

Almost ready for the road now, the last thing needed for its Blueslip inspection(roadworthy) is a front brakelight microswitch.  I know I can get the switch at Jaycar and solder it the replacement onto the original wiring.  Well there's that and recover the seat(no problem there). I was intending to swap to the low seat, but now that I've ridden it with both I think I'll stick to the original.

Just had 2 new Pirelli Angel GTs fitted, they transform the bike. With the worn PR2s it was falling into corners, now it just leans in happily.

Now all the safety and roadworthy stuff is done, it's time to start on valve clearance checks/sparkplugs/airfilter etc and get it running right.  I've really very little idea of the service history so it's best to start from scratch.

yeah I noticed that too ....but picked up a second handy to try out ...I was not impressed ...the demon  works well on the  8 valve and suspension setup ...as it is

but is becoming noisy as the braking bias affects the tread pattern ....after those new discs went on ...

I'll post a pic later but I've found something strange, the brake pedal seems to be delaminating like a piece of rotten timber, which is odd when it appears to be an alloy casting.

I was asked about that by another owner over here too. Its worth doing a good check on an older K, but at the same time the rear brake is not used very much if you mostly let engine braking do its job.

The  previous owners memory of maintenance is very patchy.  I decided that at 195,000kms a new timing chain was probably a good idea. So this morning I pulled it down to replace it.  The old chain didn't seem all that badly worn, the tensioner extended about 10mm, the guides showed some wear but not a huge amount.  The tensioner now extends very little.  I took the opportunity to remove the inlet cam to see what shims were in there (I'd checked the clearances and idientified 3 valves that were a little out of range previously). After some swapping about I now only have one that is just slightly tight.

All running good again now.  I still need to get the injectors cleaned and have to change the clutch sometime soon (already have most of the parts), it's showing some slippage every now and again.

So far: brakes (master cylinders and pads), battery, tyres, steering head bearings, grips, footpeg rubbers, fork gaiters, recovered seat, timing chain & guides, fuel pump plus the expected filters and fluids.

But it's a joy to ride, I'm even starting to think I might actually leave it's patina alone.

Al

It does have a certain charm looking rough while being mechanically good, I'd keep it as it is for a while. You can always re-spray it later on if you decide you prefer something that needs polish.
