1985 K100. Jumps out of second gear and won't shift higher than second. Time to check the clutch spline lube?

Well, You'll be removing the transmission to repair it, so you can lube the clutch while it's out.
I suspect you need trans repairs. The good news is that there are a lot of good used transmissions out there for very reasonable money. So In My Opinion, it makes better sense to exchange it rather than repair it.
Regards, Ibj....

But is transmission really faulty?  You don't replace the fuel tank just because the cap is faulty, do you?  Seems everything points to clutch spline lube by some of the shifting problem posts here.  Anyone else have any ideas?

After engaging 1st & starting away......it should be possible to shift up through gears even with the clutch fully engaged (even if a little herky-jerky), by backing off the throttle slightly at the shift points between gears. The fact that it won't go above 2ond at any time, coupled with the fact that it pops out of second........sounds like more than just a clutch problem.

Maybe someone else on the forum will follow with a more desirable opinion.
I really hope that I am incorrect.

Also with the bike on the center stand and the engine off you should be able to shift through all 5 gears up & down, by jogging the back tire back & forth slightly as you lean on the shift pedal with your hand.

Regards, Ibj..

I agree with ibj s comments . We have seen here where the shift lever clamp bolt was fouling on a non standard exhaust . This would be your only chance of an external fix AFIK . Agree better to buy a sh box then fix the old one at your leisure . Good luck with it , G

Totally agree, if you are having problems shifting up and down then suspect the splines but cant shift past 2nd then you have gearbox problems.  Has the shift lever got a lot of slack as you may have trouble with the shift mechanism. There is a small grub screw that can work lose and will sometimes cause the problem but more often it prevents any changes.
As ibj said you are going to have to pull the gearbox out for repair or replace but whatever you do dont throw the old one away they are needed for spares by others.

If you do decide to part it out......I too have one of those "paper thin" rear rotors you spoke of. I had a just like new one that I sold for $40 and now I'm kicking myself BIG TIME.
Pleas give me an option on that almost new one that your recently installed.
I could really use a deal on one.
Thanks, Ibj...

A forum voyeur!  Anyhow, drained the gearbox and only found 2 very small metal flakes stuck to the drain plug. Fluid filtered out clean and didn't feel any grit in it.  Gearbox still pooched? Plus all the other stuff I find worn out.  There's a 96 K1100lt in Minnesota I'd like to look at.  Considered a K1200LT (my buddy bought one) but the final drive and hydraulic clutch servo failures are scaring me away.  The K1100 seems to be a happy medium.  I'll give you first crack at the rotor at a "reasonable" price.  Remember shipping and hassle increase tenfold the minute it crosses that border.

I believe someone said that it's possible that your problem results from a loose grub screw on the inner end of the gearshift lever shaft???? Perhaps. That would be a reasonably easy fix, maybe. Probably would entail a new shift lever shaft and the end screw + perhaps the part on the end of the shaft that the screw actually secures to the shaft.
It would certainly be worth taking the cover off for an assessment when you take the tran. out.
I believe I mentioned testing to see if you could move the trans into other gears while sitting idle (not running)  by jogging the rear wheel slightly for & back while operating the shift lever with your hand???
Did you try that?
As for the rotor....it looks like it would cost at least $41 to mail it from here to there......I wonder if it goes the opposite way for the same money?
If I were shipping it anywhere in the usa.....it would be about $15.
I don't know where in CA you are located. Any chance you come south of the border now & again for any other reason?
Anyway. we will see as time goes on.
Thanks for the consideration at least.
Regards, ibj...

I'm in Winnipeg and 60 miles from the border. I cross frequently to pick up stuff.  I don't like being ripped off by customs brokers, it's usually cheaper to drive down and pay the taxes and duty, and then it's still cheaper than buying here!

Any possibility if we can get a deal on this rotor (if/when you might be ready) that we can get you to mail it from the south side Us post office?
Actually, I think I could ship it from your home on my personal FedEx employee account for $26.
