I had a gear go bad on the odometer.  Took it apart after reading various posts and articles.  Only one gear appeared to be damaged/deteriorated, so I replaced just that gear.  Unfortunately, in the process of taking the bad gear out I decided that the speedo face had to be removed.  I now need to put the needle back on and I'd like to calibrate the speedometer with Karamba.

I need to know which pins do what on the back of the speedo. I reassembled it with the needle pointing to zero... not sure if that will be right or not. Has anyone else had to remove the needle and put it back? Is there a special procedure or process for this (it's a BMW after all)?

I've seen posts elsewhere that suggest I should find
12v+
sensor in
sensor out (wtf? really?)
ground.

I'm just not sure which direction is which and don't want to gamble or disassemble it far enough to get the board out for examination.

I really think it's +, sens, ground after looking at the connector.

and here's how I hold the speedo assembly... a $28 vise from Amazon....

Hmm. 6 and 23 checkout...but the multimeter says 21 goes to the speedo. I will try again later. I couldn't get anything out of it with karamba. I was going to put it in the bike and try again.

I saw that... .and posted back that when I traced the pins with a multimeter 6 and 23 matched his recommendation, but 22 did not. I plan to recheck it, but thought it was odd. I'm not sure if the instrument cluster was original anyway. I thought I saw a date on it that was much newer than the bike.

i saw that one as well.  What are 21, 22, and 23?

I'm pretty sure that I zapped the speedo electronics because it wasn't working when I did my test ride today.... dammit.  Smile
