This is my first BMW motorcycle though I have owned many bikes over the last 30 years or so. I bought the bike from a friend that was moving and needed to get rid of some toys. I originally bought the bike to flip but once I got it home and started looking around the web I am leaning towards keeping it to ride back and forth to school. The bike is a 1985 BMW K100 and at the moment not running. Hopefully some of the senior members here can point me in the right direction to get on the road before it gets to cold outside.

I too bought a non-runner with the thought of flipping it. I've put 30,000 miles on it so far.

There is a lot of knowledge here and I'm sure your K will be up and running in no time.

Thanks Jim for the words of encouragement. I am looking forward to getting it up and running. I am sure it is something little that is the problem I just haven't had time to mess around with it yet. I have been reading over posts here and I am sure if I can't figure it out someone here surely will.

You have to make a full assessment of the bike before we can can assist you.
Do you have fuel injection, ignition,....?
As soon as you will be able to pinpoint your problem, start a new thread in the appropriate forum and we will help you.

I am planning on taking some time over the weekend to get a little better acquainted with my brick. All I know for sure is that he (my friend) was riding it (less than 5 miles) and it just quit. No sputtering or any heads up before it happened. He had just put a new fuel pump on it and said that before that day it was running fine for a bike that had been rode less than a couple of hours in 5 years. He is a mechanic and said he thought it may be in the kill switch but he didn't put any time into figuring it out before he put it back in the garage.

Its unlikely to be the kill switch, but not impossible.
Quick way to check the pump is to open the fuel cap, press the starter and listen for the pump whirring for a few seconds.
No whirring, then check the connector behind the right hand side panel that powers the pump. Well known problem for K's that have sitting for a while. In fact, the multi pin connectors under the tank are all worth cleaning with a good quality cleaner like Deoxit.
Have had a fuel filter completely block on me but that was caused by the pump holder breaking up. 
After that, the usual suspects, sparks, etc.
