I am new to this forum. Although I have been reading it for a while. I really like K's and I've had probably 15 or so... ( through my shop, now retired, sort of)  I also like streetfighters. My only real complaint with K's is weight. Take off 50 kilos and they go from good to terrific. ...But I have gone a bit further this time. I removed everything!  All was going swimmingly, until I snipped the instrument panel wires.  I used a GPS speedo, and a remote button ign switch,  and made a (7) idiot light panel . OK, The neutral don't work , yet. But I found how to fix that. indicator lights, oil, alt., main beam. all ok. Still working on the low fuel light... BUT when I first started  the thing after the dash mods. It would not start, It would fire but not run. Anyhow, check my work and find the coolant sensor unplugged. Fix that and It Runs!... Lovely , Up the road for a test, great, seat a bit hard but oh well I can live with that. Longer ride and hello? Engine got up to temp in traffic and I get a misfire just off idle, rev the engine somewhat, and it runs like a train. Let it cool down and the misfire has disappeared, warm it up for ten minutes and there it is again..... . It did not do this before I chopped the instruments off... I've been through all the K wiring diagrams that I have ( many! ) but can't figure out what I have done wrong.....I'm good at wiring and electrics generally.. I cut the loom open and removed all the ABS bits.. The bike ran really well after that. Right up to the time I cut the Instruments off...Any Ideas how removing instruments can trick the motronic ... I am NOT certain if it's too lean or rich. It feels too lean...but commonsense says it's too rich. ( starts well .... smooth until hot)    cheers............... Geoffrey... PS If I knew how to add pics I would....some extra info. It's a K1100LT 9/1995 58000k's running perfectly one day-  not the next (instrument amputation only ) Just added a plug check..Black plugs , so, too rich at 2000rpm? ok at 3000  ( no tacho)

hmm

one of the important things is the charge indicator

this device actually gives some feedback to the alternator for the charge process to happen .

I think I have seen some very unreliable faults develop from this simple device and the load on the battery and lack of charge happening

the ignition switch must be having a hernia trying to keep up with that constant and depreciating voltage - on the battery and the ecu does not like anything like that happening at all .

have you done anything to compensate this at all ?

just a heads up !

yup, fitted charge light wired as as per normal  12v in from ign switch  blue out to alternator, charges beautifully....(although I used a 2w led)  thanks for reading....G

heat relates misfires are often associated with a faulty (temp sensitive )  hall sensor ....

have you confirmed good undertank connections free from oxidisation ...
look up "deoxit " some fantastic restoring results ...electrically from this product

its almost certainly NOT ign related, The engine ran faultlessly , I decapitated the loom and an hour or two later I had a misfire just above idle........ONLY about  1000 revs wide...

Could it be that by running the engine without the water temp sensor connected that the motronic has gone to limp home mode ? I'll clear the faults and try again!

possibly

the temp sensor unplugged produces weird mixture settings (very rich on k100 8 valve units)
now that I see that you have added "black plugs at under 3000"

do motronic systems lock out weird readings from external sensors  and then reset well?  ....I guess battery off for a while produces a clean reset ?

I think I would be going to the input pins of the ecu to prove that it is indeed pluged in correctly and measures right .

might be a good idea to add model and year to youre signature  so that we don't have to guess on future posts

Ok, so I reset the Motronic by unplugging for a bit. Result. Much improved! WTF?.... Richness still there but took 25minutes to manifest itself ( pre reset took 10) not really a problem anymore. So the Motronic retained the  "no water sensor" code. Adjusting the CO pot. did not help at all...... I will go around all the connectors with a spray, see if that helps...

OK here's the lowdown on instrument amputation....There are two bright green wires going to the instruments, one feeds 12v to some  idiot lights, the other (same green colour ) is a signal to the revcounter, both show 12v with ign on. using one will give you a misfire , the other will not!........Thanks Everybody............, Geoff
