was wondering has anybody ever tried linking the throttle bodies together with a balance tube plugged into the port that you use to balance the bodies we do this with all of the carb bikes I wonder if it would work on a K bike?

Yes it does. the 16 valve and the K1100s have a large diameter pipe that links them but it is at the rear so you don't see it too easily.

If that's the case, do you still need to sync the TB's on the 16v engines?

I seem to remember this mod being done on jap fours years ago for the same reason, but was sceptical at the time.
Can understand it needing to be a large bore pipe. If the bore was small, I couldn't see it allowing for the quick changes in vacuum between, say, the front and rear TB.

When I bought my 16v, new throttle rubbers and a full sync using the factory screws was one of the first things that I did, it transformed the bike despite having that tube at the back!

Bikerboy I think that tube enters the venturi above the butterfly and so has no effect till the butterfly opens up a bit. I have my balance tubes all joined to use the vacuum cruise control and to be honest it didn't seem to make any difference
