If you have a look at this thread, you will see this photo (I've added the arrows):

Speedometer gear repairs in Australia - an option... Speedo11

I was talking to the owner of The BM Shop here in Brisbane and I was told that he can replace those 3 gears (black, red and the pinkish one) for $200.00 if you give him your broken speedo. You can leave your bike there and he can pull the whole thing apart, but it'll cost you more (duh!). He says if you leave your bike here, he can check to see if all of the lights etc work after he reassembles it.

It's an option for all of those poor broken speedos out there in BMW land.

Thinking aloud here...

if I buy the speedo gears myself, it would be possible to make a cast of them to make more, wouldn't it?

There is a thread on here that I am too lazy to look up, but it shows a model maker making moulds of his gears for the speedo. Little silicone mould and some sort of plasticy resiny shiney thingy

We know where to get the gears but the price is just a little bit over the top.

I don't have an accent like Inge so I have to talk myself up some other way.

Very Sesquipedalian of me I know.

Hi There, I rebuilded mine using the gears of and old R/C servo and a printer and a set of needle files.
Couldnt get the correct gear relation so I have to multiply by a correction factor to obtain true distances, but is fairly constant and exact.
Best regards
JAP

Yes desertbeemer, that's my intention.

I will purchase a set of three gears myself (thank you for your generous offer!), that way, if I stuff-up, I have only myself to answer to.

just a thought blakey ....will those american gearsets be for miles instead of killometers ?

i know there is some calibration relationship where the speedo reads the same relative position on the meter as each other (mph - kph) but im still confused ....about the odo

It's really good that everyone is co operating on this. After I had to fix mine that is. Cost me $100.00 and was pretty easy following the 'How to' instructions.
But go ahead with plan, see if it works and we can put our
expensive supplier in his place

Charlie, the gears in the US are for MPH as far as I can find out. As we have MotoMeter gauges, it appears they are not as common as VDO gears.

I have already ordered 2 of the 12 teeth primary gear (9 US dollars each with free postage) tonight of US ebay. The other one that usually breaks is the 16/44...and you can buy that separately from the US. The 34/40 (this I believe is the KPH gear) hopefully available at Otto's at Salisbury in Brisbane.

I may be totally confused with the gears, so please clear-up and inconsistencies if you see them.

RT, can you tell us exactly what you did or point us to a thread on this subject please?

What Blakey is trying to say, good folks, is that if RT has managed to do it, then there must be a foolproof step by step instructional, avec pictures.

And it is true.
I'm not able to figure out how to post a link (stop larfing) but it is in the "how to" section
under Speedo Repair. An article from Eastern Beaver Newsletter (Phillip Hortin is the author) entitled BMW KBIKE Speedo Repair Page 2.
I printed it off ages ago cause I'm afraid of not being able to find this stuff again.

It's important to remember that these cogs just slide on, but the primary little first one should be carefully cut off with a sharp instrument (ask your mother to help).Otherwise you can bend the really important shaft.

I'll try and search this up again as it has great pictures. (and someone can link it)

Just found it. CF posted a link in 2011 called K Bike How to, so don't look under "how to"
section. This is a pdf file embedded in CF's post "K Bike How To" wish I could do the same.

Hi Guys.

Just reviving this post to ask a quick question.

I recently bought (ebay) an instrument cluster with 4000mi. on the odometer. It looks pretty good and almost smells new. Also, the date stamp is from 1992.

Problem is--the trip odometer seems to have a slight problem with the 3d digit from the right (tens of miles) as it lags behind by one digit when turned (2 when it should be 3, 3 when it should be 4, etc.).

So, my question;
a) is this a typical problem, or
b) is this an indication that someone may have tampered with the odometer?

I haven't opened it up yet as I bought it for spares (clock, gear indicator, etc.), but if I do what should I look for?
