Hi Guys,
John here from Stamford, CT. My 1985 K100RT has been off the road for the past two years. Sleep

Today, I put in a nice new AGM battery and changed the oil and filter. She started right up and hardly smoked at all. I also have to flush the various fluids. Once I renew the insurance, she will be my daily driver. The riding season in Connecticut isn't as long as I'd like, so I have a lot of  miles to cover if I am going to make up for the 24 months or so that she was slumbering.

Hope to be an active member of the Forum.

Hey John,

I'm about 50 minutes away in Mahwah NJ.  Smile  I bought a 1985 K100 RT 3 weeks ago. Got new tires on, an oil & filter change and the rear splines lubed last week. Nieces boyfriend helped with that. I've put 200 miles on the bike since then.
Can you recommend a mechanic in the area? I'm hoping to teach myself on this bike, starting with the easier stuff but it would be nice to know I have somewhere to turn in case I get over my head.

Stew

Hi John welcome to the forum. That K will be ready to run after a good sleep like that. You need to be careful if they have any more sleep they can get lazy and we don't need to have them laying down in the middle of the road Wake Up Little K-Bike 177912 .

Actually, Stew, the little work she's needed since I got her about seven years ago, I've done myself. There used to be a BMW dealer near me in New Canaan, but they are gone now, leaving Danbury as the closet one. Good luck with your new toy. I really like mine a lot. I bought it to replace an R90/6 that was also a wonderful ride. The two experiences are like night and day, though.

Ha! Thanks! No, she's feeling nice and frisky. And so far her tires have never been off the tarmac.

It is, Bob. And when I bought it some years back, it was crazy cheap -- $2200, I think, with less than 20k on the clock. People tell me I stole it. A little elbow grease this summer and she'll look almost like new. These bike are incredible bargains!

OMG--welcome to the forum!

My RT has been terrorizing the upper valley (Connecticut River) for the past couple years, sport touring and trying to get the best and most performance out of the classic RT.

There is a new branch of Max BMW in Connecticut, is probably the best parts outlet, but don't have them do any work unless you have a big budget.  I can recommend Affordable BMW in Manchester as the best independent mechanic in the country. It takes a while to get an appointment (about 2 months to schedule a spline lube), but Chris cut his teeth on the K1 and likes these old bikes more than anything else.

Enjoy the ride.  :smoke:

Thanks, AJ. That's good to know. I have always relied on Max's schematics to identify parts, but so far haven't needed professional shop work. Hardly ever see K-bikes around here. Actually see a lot more boxers. Got up early today for first ride of the season (once I figure why I have no brake light; hoping it's the bulb).

John
