Dear All, I'm going to have my left ankle "fused" at the end of next month. I'll be incapacitated for about 6 months. The fusion process involves two metal plates bolted to the leg above and below the ankle joint to keep the joint apart a bit. (At the moment it's bone on bone) It doesn't involve getting the oxy-acetelyne out and fusing it together!

I was wondering if any of you out there in K-Land have had this procedure done, and your views on its success. I'm hoping that I'll still be able to change gears with the fused ankle.

Cheers, Rickmeister.

GMcQ lives up Belfast way and I think had this done but he has not been on for quite a while. We met Gerard on the Norn Iron trip, very nice guy so maybe try to find him. Comberjohn is currently gone walkabout down my way so we will ask him.

I hope it works out for you. But if it doesn't there is a company makes a conversion to a hand change. . .

My older brother's left ankle has no movement at all, it wasn't fused but has the same effect and he gets along just fine. He has been using it like that for 20years and most people dont even realize there is anything different. That may be why he can't stand when he gets drunk food for thought there Uli.
I had my left wrist arthrodised (almost no movement) in 1989 then fused about 3 years ago and I was very concerned that it may affect my riding but with a few small adjustments to handlebars it's as bad as everLaughing If it had been my right wrist it would have affected my writing.
Don't be too concerned about it the human body will adjust to many adverse situations and after a while you will be sitting there one day and thinking now how did I do that before I had the fusion done.
6 months Pfffft tell them they got 6 weeks max to fix it you have a rally to go to just before Christmas! Watch their faces.Laughing

Right Rick...now the challenge is out to the K Kommunity.....convert a K to an automatic shift for you. I know that you have been refused at times in different places....but this time it is a little different.

Thanks Lads!! I really appreciate your kind thoughts! Decided to join a gym for the next 5 weeks and do a daily session in the torture chamber to get some blood circulation happening.

No bikes for months, Ulrich?! You're a stronger man than I. I couldn't take it. Perhaps we'll drop in to help cheer you up on our way down to Victoria. We're headed there via Wyalong Way and other roads, mid-September.

Best of luck and a rapid recovery to you.

It's the start of the fourth week since the "chop". Had the original cast/dressing removed the other day, and according to the physio who does these things everything looks really good. The two cuts have healed nicely and the stitches removed.

A fancy you-beaut fibreglass cast is now in place...still can't put any weight on it.

Gave a bum steer, re: the fusion. The surgeon scrapes out all the bone debris from the ankle joint and cleans it up as best as possible. Then a couple of 7mm screws to locate the upper/lower ankle joint in place. They then inject some wonder-gunk ($1500 for thimblefull) into the joint. This facilitates the bone cell migration between the upper and lower bits, eventually becoming one solid bone / no longer a joint. In the old days they used to do a bone graft from the hip bone to the ankle.

Got to go back on 11th Nov, for a WALKING CAST!!!

The time is dragging on incredibly slowly. Thank God for this forum to maintain some sort of sanity. Getting reasonably good at Sudokus.

Rickmeister.

Good to see you back here, its not an easy time but good to enjoy some banter. Amazing how fast the time goes. Not sure how much physio follows this but if there is any it is the key to getting back to where you need to be.

Oh No 11th Nov is the day they hanged Ned Kelly and my wedding anniversary so I will think of you.
Good to see you're getting there on schedule and my sympathies about the time dragging on I was 4 months in traction with a busted femur and after a while there you get so institutionalized that you start complaining if the paper boy is 5 minutes late. Hang in there Ned did. Laughing
