G'day All, A very stupid question....what are the consequences of mixing different brands of coolant even though they seem to have the same ingredients. How serious is the issue??? Cheers Tom

other that you might get some chemical reaction from the different ph levels ...and affecting the aluminium and steel parts cathodic reactions ...probably not much tom

but it would pay to keep the mix the same throughout the system ...many believe that demineralised water is the best choice with the various concentrates that can be added rather than buying premixed ...and relatively expensive coolant

cheers mate !

Thanks Charlie, I'll stick to the same coolant. I think the concentrate manufacturers recommend that demineralised water be used. Cheers Tom

The problem I have seen is that they don't mix. I drained a K some time ago that had the red coolant and been topped up with green and they came out red first then the green even after having been run for some days before I opened it.

agree about the distilled water and concentrated coolant,
have seen two coolant types -red and green- added to a system that resulted in a whitish jelly/slime , requiring methe poor fool to have to flush the system a half a dozen times.

The one I sorted was overheating but had been left for a few days before I drained so maybe if you left it I wonder if it would have separated or maybe the coolants were different again. Wasn't it nice when we used water it sure was simple.

water was what used to go in radiators i recall that also, flushing and filling them from the garden hose. the green stuff was only for if ambient temps were extreme , a trip to the snow or alice springs in summer, and those new fangdangled alloy head engines (how can engines be made from cans ?)

its a wierd world when new car manufacturers can produce and specify all their own fluids and oils, extortive some may say ..
