In my garage there's my low-mileage, liquid nitro velvet magic carpet ride of a K1200GT Brick sharing space with a trusty, 134,000 mile (215,000 kms) 2004 R1150RT which I use to commute on when the Pacific North West weather turns south, due to its relaxed road manners and acres of extra fairing area. There's an in-storage project 2002 R1150GS parked in there too. And in OZ awaiting my imminent return is a 1987 K100RS, a 1991 R100, and in bits is my venerable 1977 R75/7 which I've owned since new. I love straddling them all for their own reasons!

I used to race. Stopped in 2009. Was racing a FZR1000W with major mods at the time. We have a pre1989 post classic class.

That was also the year of my first BMW   r1200s. I would rate it as one of the best bikes I have owned.
Its one I should have kept.

My other steed is a Moto Guzzi V7 Racer from 2011.  It had a hard start to its life (house fire survivor) but, like a stray dog, I rescued it from an insurance recovery centre, and restored it.  Added a Stucchi Luigi quarter fairing, bar-end mirrors, Flyhammer rearsets, Dynojet PC-V and Dynojet Autotune.

Rob - what are those V7s actually like? I caned the nuts off a Targa for a magazine roadtest when the small block 750s first came out and was absolutely underwhelmed by its performance (couldn't say that in the article of course! Smile ). I couldn't even get it to three figures (mph). AFAIK the V7 engine is a fuel-injected Targa motor, so I don't expect much difference in that department?

I've not ridden any other small block than the V7 I own so I can't compare to the Targa.  The small block engine and the Tonti frame are staples of Guzzi, having been the same for decades.  Guzzi has modernized the engine by introducing fuel injection, electronic ignition, computerized instrument console, and better disk brakes.

If you were to ride the V7R, I think that you'd probably draw the same conclusions you drew years ago about the Targa.  It is no SS that's for sure.  It competes well in its class with twins like the Triumph Bonneville.  I love this bike for its simplicity, its flickability and its fun factor.  It has plenty of character.  I added a Dynojet PC-V and Autotune to correct the factory fuelling which was pretty lean to meet emissions standards.  The Dynojet components sets the AFR to a precise 13.4, where the engine loves to be.  It pulls evenly over much of its RPM range from idle to 6000 RPM.  I don't try to push the bike so I can't say what its top speed is, but I would agree that it would quickly run out of breath trying to beat a Ton.  I use the bike as a commuter vehicle.  It rides in traffic very steadily and predictably.  It's short on storage so I have to use a backpack.

Comparing to the K75, I prefer the K75 over the MG.  The BMW is classier, more powerful, smoother, as nimble and very fuel efficient.  The styling of my BMW attracts even more attention than the Italian styling of the V7R.  In short, I love both my bike, both are keepers and each has its own character giving me exactly what I want and neither competes with the other for my attention.

Surprised this thread isn't more popular? Anyway I have a '94 CB250 that looks like this:

A '95 Japanese import TRX850 with some fork mods and other little bits and pieces:

And a '84 CBX250RS-E which has had a full engine rebuild from crank upwards/outwards, always broken in some way but so glorious and visceral when it does finally work for a bit, the dual carbs and big valves make their presence known:

My '84 K100 is my daily ride. Love this bike to bits. In the garage, there is a running '76 Goldwing 1000GL that is undergoing restoration. Then recently, a '84 Virago 750 came my way. This thing's TCI is blown and has been repaired once; only to be blown again!. Suspect it is/was the one coil. Bought in a Dyna coil and waiting for the parts to re build the TCI box again (PO Strike - noting moves here; Weeks now!)

My ride to work is short; about 2 miles. But, I live in one of the most beautiful parts of our country. Now that it is spring down here; the mornings are perfect. So, my daily commute to work usually ends up being a 50 mile 'quick' trip to the mountains and back. Incredible way to start one's day .....

Commuter w/an aftermarket 3.0 gallon (11 liters) tank for about 225 miles b. fill ups.

Actually a lot of fun.

I love mine, 65K miles on the clock and the engine runs just like the day it left the factory. And it's so simple to work on! In June I took mine on a 1500 mile thrash around Scotland including some offroading, it never missed a beat despite looking like it could fall to bits any moment. I was so proud!

There are plenty of them here in the UK but they're going up in price now, mostly thanks to a magazine called "Practical Sportsbikes" banging on about them - Every time they print something on TRXs the prices spike.

When I bought mine it was fairly horrible, the suspension was all wrong and it wore some ancient Michelins that didn't want to go around corners. But some PR3s, cartridge emulators in the forks and fiddling with the settings of the rear shock (and sliding the yokes down the forks to where they should have been rather than sitting at the top!) has made it a far nicer machine. I can't help but wonder if a TDM would be a better bike to own though?

I've had 2 TDMs, a Mk1 850 and an '02 900.  Both great bikes. I did ride a TRX once but ended up with a VTR1000 instead, another great bike (wish I'd never sold it).  The TDMs have a great Forum: Carpe TDM

Currently have a 1974 Yamaha RD350 that is a survivor.  Bought for $675, put H4 headlight in, new turn signal relay, ~40 hours cleaning, polishing, rerouting mis-routed throttle cable, swapping exhaust from '75 project (better shape), cleaning, rebuilding and synching carbs.

I also have a project '75 RD350 that is getting an RD400 engine that is mildly ported, MZB/Zeel ignition, a set of Pro-Flo chambers and (soon) a modernized reproduction of Webco heads w/toroidal combustion chambers.

I have stripped, primed and painted the frame, swingarm, and sidestand, polished the front fork lowers and rear brake covers.  The 7" headlight bucket (Emgo), modified headlight ears, oil tank and two right side covers have been painted and awaiting the decals I have  for them.

I have made provision for mounting LED turn signals all around.

I have had new main bearings put on the crank - the rod bearings are ok, and rebuilt the entire bottom end w/new seals.

Waiting on production of the heads to bolt it all together and do the necessary wiring for the MZB iggy.

I will not put tanks and side panels on for decals until engine in place - ditto for wiring - for obvious reasons.

Will be happy to post pics of this one when finished.

Just so you know, Snod is lying about the CB250s, i have one too (Red his name and colour) and they are awful! And he wants us to do Morocco on them! He has also failed to mention the very stylish way he has to get onto his TRX Razz

In the retirement shed i have a
Honda H100A (Henry) 1981
Honda CB250N (Red) 1994

BMW K100LT (The much beloved Bikey) 1989

Main bike at the moment is
Yamaha FJR1300 (The psychopath / The Yam, he hasn't got a real name yet as not friends with him) 2001

Also occasionally take out my Dads Honda X11, she wouldn't get out if i didn't take her and the battery keeps going flat.

Also had a few of these, this one is Billy

I've just brought the Checker Cab home from the workshop where I've stored it since January. It's a 2000 model year K1200RS with just 20,769 miles (33,424kms) on the odo.

There were two previous owners, neither of whom bothered to flush the brake fluid on a biennial basis. As a result the brake system, when the key's on, locks the calipers/master cylinder after a few pumps of the hand lever. I've attempted to 'bleed off' the binding at the calipers but, alas, is doesn't produce the desired result. As I am a motorbiKe spare parts pacKrat I have a good-condition master cylinder and a pair of front Brembo calipers at hand if they're needed. The 'puter throws up an ABS fault code. It was fun riding it home (1.7 miles) with the calipers spread and not daring to touch the front lever. Interestingly, jabbing the rear brake lever at will does nothing to bind the fronts...

It runs strongly and fires instantly, even with 18 month old fuel in the tank that stinks of aged furniture polish. The Remus Innovation full system is awfully sweet sounding; tight, rorty and eager.

There's a workshop in Idaho known as Module Master who are particularly good at this type of ABS module so this weekend I'm yarding it out from under the acreage of plastic and sending it away for a spanking and re-education.

The last last owner had the pannier lids painted the same yellow/grey checker theme as the leading edge of the side fairing panels. It's so ghastly it's cool.

I have a lovely R100R with just 34,000 miles on it.

My new RS-very good!

The Flying Brick.

....unfortunately I crashed it at a track day.....start again!

An R1200R that we keep in Spain.

and this coming Sunday I'm collecting a K100C that we've agreed on at £400! I've not seen it yet but it's meant to be a one P/O bike with just 22,00 miles and a tank full of melted rubber. Still, something to do come the dark nights.

I began my "return to 2ond childhood" by buying a very "used up" 1985 K100RS from a dismantler.
I simply did not have the imagination scope to understand how difficult, time consuming & expensive any one machine could be to refurbish to at least good enough to be roadworthy, let alone restored.
The last photo on the page is a before & after shot of what I have after spending nearly $6,000 and 9 months working on it.
One would think I would have learned my lesson on the K100, but no.....I went out and did it all again by purchasing another very used up 1977 Yamaha RD400.....Always kinda wanted one of these just for the "cool factor".  Purchased for $700.......spent another $6,000 or so returning this one to former glory status.....although it must be noted that at least $1,500 of that was due to my own mechanical errors in working on the engine. Must have seized this thing 6 times on the freeway before I got it all sorted out.....LOL.

I think I did a bit better when I purchased the 1982 R100RS shown in pic #3. This one was reported to have only 26,000 original miles on it when I purchased it (with no history records) from an individual on Craigslist.
Although I did make it back from where I purchased it in Oakland, CA to my home in Phoenix, AZ without incident on the beautiful grey machine.......some items found during my initial inspection maintenance didn't quite add up.......I'm happy to report that all is good now!

The 1970 Moto Guzzi Ambassador shown in photo #2 was willed to me by my late best friend who passed away when he was only 38. It is a USA import model that he purchased new in Europe. I'm not totally sure that the fuel tank is the correct original as the graphics appear to be from a V7 Sport. My benefactor did have a fairly serious accident while still touring in Europe on the machine......my thought is that the original tank was replaced during the collision repair with the one shown in the photo???

Finally we have in pic #1 my 1998 R1100RT also purchased in a somewhat shady deal from an eBay auction.
I paid $3000 for this one with 72,000 miles on the clock. It was the original Black color when I received it and did have some dings & other light damage. Shortly after returning home to Phoenix on it from the purchase in Long Beach, CA......an annoying low knocking noise was diagnosed in the engine and was subsequently traced to a very worn rear main crankshaft bearing. A very nice 14,000 mile used RS engine was procured from a local dismantler for a bargain price of $300 and installed by me at home. (Not easy).
Last year's trip to the BMWMOA rally in Minneapolis, MN proved the machine's road worthy-ness although a troublesome fuel pump reared it's ugly head somewhere in the wilds of rural Wyoming on our way home and had to be replaced at a friends house in Denver, CO. ...Fortunately, we were able to keep going between WY & CO by keeping the tank above 3/4 full.
We did drop it at low speed while in MN doing very minor damage to the fairing work.....since this was already the 2ond time I had dropped this behemoth.....I decided to repaint this one before our next scheduled long run (next week) to the 2015 BMWMOA rally in Billings, MT.
Although the picture doesn't really do the paint justice......I was very pleased with my handy work.
We're hoping for fair weather & good luck on the upcoming journey.
 Regards.......Ibjman

November 11, 2015 - Update:
I'm getting older now and not able to enjoy my "fleet" as much as I once did.
It is with mixed emotions that I decided to "Thin the herd".
The beloved 1985 K100rs that I have so much invested in (both emotionally and expense wise) has been passed along to my daughter Amanda and her husband Alex to ride & enjoy for (hopefully) years of future rides.
The 1977 Yamaha RD 400 that I recently completed re-building was sent along to them as well.
Farewell to a couple of fine machines!

Very nice collection, J-Man!  Lots of sweat equity there, eh?
If in sharing you machines and experiences with us you intend it to be a cautionary tale, I suspect it'll fall on deaf ears Razz   This lot is prone to buying and rescuing unloved old machines.
Personally, I'm at the age where I find less rewards in turning wrenches than was the case in the past. My old knees are telling me "light, reliable, carefree" machines are the future of my hobby.
Be that as it may, you're my inspiration, J-Man! Tirelessly working away in withering heat that would  halt mere mortals like me....
I'm really looking forward to buying you a cold one in Billings next week.  cheers

Oh no.
How bad? Looks a bit cosmetic, apart from the broken handle bar, but with custom fairing even cosmetic is major.

I dug the Montesa out of the shed a couple of weeks ago, from where it hasn't moved in about 18 years.

After cleaning off some of the wax-oil, it's looking surprisingly good. I've bought some tank sealer that's claimed to be suitable for fibre-glass tanks, so when that's done, it should be all ready to go. (Modern petrol with ethanol eats fibre-glass resin, apparently).

The motor turns over sweetly with excellent compression and there's a good spark.

As it's 1972, it's exempt from road tax and, as it's always been insured on my K's policy for a mere additional £15, with a MOT test I could be using it.

Olaf, do you think I should change the 43 year old front tyre? It's still got loads of tread.

On the other hand, I could just cover it with wax-oil again and put it back in the shed.  Question

Paul

BTW, I bought it new in 1972 for £295!

Paul, the way you look after your machinery is an inspiration - it looks like you just bought it.

Would be interesting to hear your comments after you have ridden it to a camping weekend either standing up all the way or if sitting down you probably wouldn't be able to stand up.

Cheers

Still a Beemer! It's listed in my signature but I hadn't thought to post a good pic of it on here before. Had it since 1998, doesn't go out much but will never part with it as my son has a claim on it.

There's something about the noise that an airhead beemer makes - it's hard to beat and very distinctive.

Sorry for the late reply.
It isn't too bad but it's done the clip on, tank, seat ,fairing, screen, top stay and footrest hanger.
The fairing is scrap and I've decided to make another tank that's narrower at the back.

Still,something to do eh lads?

Whilst preparing the Yellow Peril for sale this morning, last minute boxes to tick off the list before it sells, I had a brief chance to align the planets before they're gone from view.

Rosskk(kk)o, that little unit looks like it needs a run to the Scrapheap Adventure to clean out the cobwebs.

Quandialla on the Thursday night?

Cheers

If only Gaz. Not sure why this year something always seems to be happening when I should be going for a ride.
Have a 50th and 21st to attend to in the coming weeks although the bike does qualify.
The receipt says $999.99

Happens to us all mate! I had planned to be at Blue Boxer too but had to pass in favour of family needs. At least I was lucky enough to ride up here to Emerald on the K1100.

We'll be thinking of you at Quandialla.

Cheers

p.s. Loved the outfit you displayed last weekend.
