Hi.
My name is Terry Fitzgerald & I'm new to the forum. I just bought a 1985 K100RT this summer as my primary commuter bike. I was not sure I'd like the style or handling since I'm used to more cruiser style seating. But I've learned to love my beemer, even with her quirks (like loud fuel pump, crazy acting speedo, rattling brakes, false neutral on shifts, & rather warm ride even with the home made engine heat deflectors). My kiddoes love riding with me. Here's my baby.

Welcome Fitzy from Oz.

Your new toy is very similar to mine, even to same colour and year, but I've never seen a seat like that on a K. How is it for riding?

Cheers,

Bill

The seat is an old corbin touring saddle (so says the guy I bought it from, but there's no corbin markings under it). I bought the bike from the son of the owner, who had passed away. The son had taken this seat off & put the stock seat on. He also removed the trunk & the tow package. I put the seat & trunk back on, but I haven't put the tow package back on yet.

I rode it 172 miles home after buying it using the stock seat. It was like riding a brick. My posterior ached something fierce after that ride. This touring seat is wonderful. It's not quite like riding a goldwing, but it's close. Very comfortable!

The one down side is that my torso is longer than my legs, so even though I'm 6'1", with the stock seat I could barely get my feet flat on the ground when stopped. Now that I'm using this wider seat, I'm on my tip toes when stopped.

I have been hunting for one for a while but by the time I pay for freight to Oz it gets a bit expensive.

Though it isn't advertised on their site for K100's anymore, Russell may still make you one.

Welcome to the forum.  When I bought my '85 K100RS the speedo was very erratic.  The solution was as simple as cleaning the sending unit back on the final drive.  It has been very stable (and accurate!) ever since. That fix and many others are explained if you do the research.  Well, worth the effort I'd say.  I have grown to love my Flying Brick.

First of all, welcome to the forum.

A bit of history; When I first joined the form several years ago I was confused over the designation of RT and LT.

My basic question has long been, what is an "RT?" An RT is actually a sports touring machine, so called "Road Touring." It has a low windscreen and low handlebars and was designed for superior handling and the high speeds of the Autobaun (see link in my signature).

It appears that marketing didn't like the idea of the RT taking sales away from the popular RS model, so in 1988 BMW changed the windscreen, raised the handlebars, and re-branded it "LT" for luxury touring. (Also, with a national 55mph speed limit here in the U.S.A, it didn't make much sense to market a high speed touring bike.) This conversion created a large number of BMW riders who liked the LT concept, and so along the way a fair number of existing RT's were modified to the LT configuration.

I hope you understand, the bike you purchased is one of those modified LT's, and is no longer an RT given that configuration.
