And, if you want the BMWNA original equipment ETK online with current US prices (for comparo shopping purposes), go here: ETK with US price

It's from Simplepart and will allow the buyer to drop items into a shopping basket to be supplied and shipped by the nearest BMW dealer if you so choose.

Some years ago I was attending a BMW function in Spartanburg with top BMWNA brass at the official US release of the much-maligned R1200CLC. The talk round the table at dinner was about pricing, warranty and etc. One of the gents seated next to me (a long-time NA employee named Frank S.) mentioned that BMW North America bid on and accept their spare parts and bike allotment price (of current and anticipated models) up to eighteen months before the product reaches the market. Because the US is a large share of AG's total they wield some stick in the bidding process. Therefore it's not surprising that many parts cost significantly lower than overseas, even lower than in some of the Euro markets.

So, fast forward a few years and I'm chatting with a BMW exec at a gig in Melbourne. The Big Kahuna from BMWAustralia told those gathered as we whinged and sooked about the prices we're expected to pay (as dealers) that the Australian market is relatively small in comparo (2,000+ new bikes per year in the OZ/New Zealand market as compared to 20,000+ new per year in the US, at the time) so we get to enjoy the rough end of a pineapple in comparison, pricewise.

The economies of scale at work.

Yep . . . We get this all the time in NZ.

You get used to it.

It is all just a part of doing business in an Island economy.

Parts for all sorts of things grossly over priced, like kitchen taps or certain hardware fittings, parts for things like Saab, Mercedes, Skoda, Volkswagon etc

It comes to be expected after about 20 years of life here. Smaller places are even worse like Fiji, the Solomans, New Guinea, Nuie etc

And, believe it or not, Northern Ireland. For a lot of British dealers that forty mile stretch of the Irish Sea is an excuse to either charge a mortgage for P&P or 'does not post to Northern Ireland'. (Scratches head) I though Britain and Northern Ireland were all part of the UK mainland? Evidently I've been labouring under a huge misapprehension for the last 55 years.

OTOH I think I've bitched about this before.

Thanks Crazy Frog. I'm in the market for parts again, and this should certainly help.
