as a result of over indulging in action and adventure on our recent Tassie trip, I am now faced with decisions as to a new styling for Blue. 
to go naked or close to it. 

during a pic opportunity , Blue was given the sit- stay command , a mis communication ended in sit -lay instead. resulting in a right sided layover, with hitch connected and a fully loaded tank dispensing itself. Unfortunately no pics of the event as safety was at a premium.
the cause may have been attributed to poor bike placement , wind conditions  and /or trailer disturbance. 


list of damages is as follows:

right side riders footpeg plate, cracked through at top mounting point. ( photo later)

right side pannier outer shell broken in bottom corner. as can be seen in previous pic.

light gauges in engine crash bar 

right side mirror pod ejected and cracked , glass still intact, pod was reseated .


shattered speaker console panel, non repairable.


chipped and cracked fairing panel , near mirror pod mount and air vent panel.

owners pride dented , but repairable.

with consideration to repair costs and time availability, having too many projects in hand at present , I am strongly favouring the naked experience ,
 this will also aid in the cooling of the operator on those long hot rides , as was felt during the longer runs to Tassie.

what options do I have of a headlight, indicator and fairing to suit the K100?
  Blue is stated as having an RS frame but somewhere along the way has been fitted out with the LT fairing.

I have a complete fairing left, but I'm uphere (Netherlands) instead of downunder  
Cost of shipment would be a bottleneck....

If time is not of the essence we might be able to send some parts back with TacKler or Indian036 but that's not until June or July. We could add some filler for repairing damaged pride. 

I think my spares have a speaker panel too.

My RT is stamped originally as RS then became RT. BMW overstamped the frame.

I rode my RT last year without the bottom parts of the fairing and it felt a great idea. Take off the lower panels and rad front. Means there are no changes or works needed to the headlight etc. and if faced with a long trip with wet weather its not too hard to put them back on.

the damage is repairable with parts I have here. all except for the footpeg plate. that is something I need to find.
in the short term, I'll remove the towbar to reduce further stressing of the plate, and hope it doesn't cause issues when rego comes along.

the current dilemma gives me the chance to reconsider styling options ,and to take advantage of removing the fairing and increase cooling in the cockpit region.

Ed, how much damage is there to the footpegs mount plate? If it's cracked find a marine engineering shop and get them to weld it & once dressed and painted I'm sure it wouldn't be an issue at rego. I know it wouldn't be where I get my pink slip.

I know the owner of a fabrication shop in Singleton who I could get to look at it for you if you want - he's the guy who repaired Floyd's bike late last year.

thanks Gaz , I'll get it off the bike first, when removing the towbar. check the full damage, and seek further advice.
as you say it may just need a braze to the back section and some fresh paint.

That's a bugger Ed. Go naked for the summer at least. Comberjohns k100 looked a millian bucks naked with a very inexpensive fleabay screen. Do a google search on the foum and you'll find it.

Aside from handlebar mounted mirrors you need little enough to convert.

Will , if nothing else , it will be good to just test the difference in weight and temp variance without the LT fairing.
other Aussies like Rossko have gone naked , but I've been too shy to ask if their experience was a positive one  

there a many options around ed ...some are a dismal attempt at some sort of café racers light and uncomplicated  dam out the front from cheap and unclassified "chinese markets "

but if you look around you might find just the thing ....just a clue to my way of thinking ...don't necessarily look for bmw specific fittings ...

there is a world  of second hand parts from all sorts of margues   Honda ..Yamaha et al ...that could be cut down to make the thing that pleases you
go out to some of the motor bike wreckers and do a little lateral thinking  with the lines and purpose ...( and some weight ..and coveradge considerations) for how you envisage the near naked experience

been there several times with repairs to the fairing ....it isn't hard ...but time consuming none the less ..and one day I will get it right and good looking ...fingers crossed

due to unavoidable ageing and injuries to the operator , the intent is to retain the handlebar height , definately not going the way of the Kafe' . even though some have good lines.

how about something like this   you may need to slide it al up just a tad  for the rt -lt bars though

are these fairings still available .......  

Yes that and the windscreen are still available.

One of the pieces - the left covering trim piece is not available.

I bought 2 rights thinking I may use some fiberglass and resin and a saw to make that piece because I bought one of the fairings that has some cracks for next to nothing and had it shipped for $60 from  - you guessed it - Australia!

Going to have to order the screen...

All those basic style fairings can be difficult to find, maybe you could find a good rs  fairing easier and at the right price. With the amount of Ks being stripped down for café bikes you often see complete fairings for sale on ebay or Gumtree, and since old blue started life as an rs  why not!

Bradman , how did yours finish up , any pics ?
I thought you might come up with something like that Smithy. It had crossed my mind as well , putting all options out there.
I've always had a liking for the indicator setup on the RS front ends , in the mirror pods. 
might be worth a look if nothing else arises. Tom and I will be using some creative thinking over a cuppa in the next few weeks , hmmmm.. how well does a 75 fairing fit.

probably straight up ed .....there doesn't seem to be many if any differences ...except for the shorter length of the motor - radiator combination

Those fairings can be got but the radiator cowl for the k100 is different to the k75 and less common. but you could make something easily to take the rough edges off.

we'll add those suggestions to the thought box , and see how they develop. much appreciated for the input.

Not one I've seen, but this K has a Suzi fairing mounted.
