This the Ode that is said at every Australian War Parade.
The words in bracket I have added to try to explain what it means.
This Ode is not just for Australians who died defending this Country, but for all Nations who lost men and women in armed conflicts.



The Ode
They shall grow not old,
(They gave up their lives freely)
As we that are left grow old,
(So that we can enjoy our freedom)
Age shall not weary them,
(Their lives cut short)
Nor the years condemn.
(They are forever young)
At the going down of the sun,
And in the morning
(Each day, their sacrifice was not in vain)
We will remember them
(They were just like you and me)
 
Lest we forget.
 
To all our fallen heroes, thank you for your sacrifice that we may live in freedom.

I also like to remember those who came back but were affected by their war experience, whether mental or physical.

As an example, in my father's family, of the 4 boys, 3 joined the army in WW2. Two fought in New Guinea and my father was kept in Australia in a training role against his wishes.
The two who went to New Guinea both died at significantly younger ages than my father and the brother who stayed on the farm. 
While there was nothing obvious to me about them, I feel sure that the war service in New Guinea was the difference between the two who died earlier and the two who died later.

There are many other examples with an even more obvious link to their war service, and their sacrifice deserves recognition too.
