G'day,
My teenage son is lacking a bit of direction at the moment (trouble at school, girls and other things). So I got a 85 K100RS and a 86 K100. The K100 was hit by a Roo and the K100RS was stripped for resto. Anyway the plan is to make one good bike out of two. We have decided on a Café Racer project. The work has begun, we will keep you posted.

Not sure if we should be impressed that you have chosen a K as a behavioural remedy or upset that you think the chicks don't dig them.
I own three Ks.
I have a wife of 30 years and two daughters only one of who has been on any of the bikes.
Three bikes, three...

Why not make a real nice RS and use the remainder to do a cafe job. Or do one each side by side.

Welcome to the forum. You will find that many of us have more than one complete bike. If one of your bikes is an early 85, than not all parts are interchangable, ie tank......gives you an excuse to build 2 bikes.

A lot more than the tank not being interchangeable. But its a great idea. Been there with my own son and it was bicycles we spent time building. Eventually found his passion in music and biology but the things learnt and relationship building have been priceless. Last weekend a bike trip out on Sunday afternoon and enjoying tea and apple pie at the beach with the 2 bikes parked up brought a lot of memories back. Feel free to PM if you want. Life is really all about Kids. Notice its spelt with a K!

Ten years on he comes over to my place to work on his bike or car and we have some great times together. They all find their own groove in time. We get grey hair while they do it.

Hi wheels. Did a similar thing with my son but it was RC model aircraft. We spent quite a few years building and flying together with powered planes and gliders, mainly slope soarers. Some of the best times we had were standing on the side of a windy hill together doing battle with 1.6m flying wings. Very fast and aerobatic. Its good bonding and it lasts. he's 30 now and we're good mates.

There is only one thing to be said about being good mates with your children when they become adults: priceless.

The second thing is: its never too late to start on it.

The first I know from my own experiences.  The second I know from an obstinate friend who has fallen out with his kids and who has his head stuck somewhere the sun doesn't shine as I keep trying to coax him to draw a line on what's caused it and make a first move. He asked why should he be the one to make the move. I had to be brutal and said its simple: the buck stops with the Dad no matter who has fired it.

KH post about the model planes had me there because my son had a bad time in his life and a family friend gave him a kit which was duly built and flown and got him interested in things mechanical.

The bonding is the key and indeed it lasts.
