Looking to clear out some space above the engine to relocate my battery. I've seen several 2V k's with the airbox removed, and a metal tube elbow like this:

Was curious how people have mounted the MAF for stability when using one of these and a cone filter.  Does changing the MAF orientation change it's operation?  Basically, is the flapper door affected by gravity if it's mounted a certain way?

i think if you keep the maf on axis   , ie flat with connector block on top , the operation should be ok

just a matter of building some form of stable bracket to hold it in place (there will be more torque applied with the tube and filter in place ) so something substantial is my best guess

As Charlie says - my experience with the flapper valve is that it doesn't work properly unless it's horizontal. That said, I have seen some pictures of custom bikes with it rotated 90 degrees - but you never know if these things actually run!
I trimmed the rubber connecting elbow on mine so's the unit pointed more out to the side.i'll post some pictures later. It's a simple enough job To make a bracket to support the unit. Search eBay for 'jetronic filter' and you should find an adaptor for a cone filter.

That's the point...
Internet is full of photos, but you don't ride a photo...

I suspect that a lot of the cafe conversions are industrial sculpture and that the builders are artists vs. riders.  If they are even used at all, it's just to get them to a graffiti covered brick or concrete wall for photos.

What are we gunna do, place four separate MAFs to the ends of four elbows? On an 8V we need a common intake manifold with which the individual elbows connect to the one MAF.

One option, though it will require a bit of fiddling in a different direction, is to obtain a Motronic unit, the appropriate separate engine wiring loom, and convert yer 8V. Everything plugs in and works and if you scour eBay and other second hand spares sites you can gather the requisite bits for not too much dosh.

This IS a 16V, but a close-up or two shows a way to change what the factory done did. This was my attempt at removing the airbox, whilst hopefully improving bottom end torque (through a substantially longer intake path between TB plate and intake valve), and giving it a bit more of a see-through 'look'. No graffiti posing required. She's a rider.

If you go so far as to adapt a Motronic, wouldn't it be just a small step to adapt a modern digital FI system like Megasquirt? That way you'd get the ability to digitally interface to the brains and tune everything about the engine, plus have access to the deep understanding of what's going on. Bosch is very secretive about how Motronic works.

If you look at how the Zorst pipes are formed in equal length to perform, then you might consider doing that with the inlets and pipe around to the flap and filter and put them on or infront of the engine. Putting the battery behind the radiator would be doubly hot with engine and radiator doing their thing. Using two radiators would resolve that and allow the filter flap and batt to be placed in optimal places. All the trail bikes of today use two radiators surely one or two would offer a solution for you.

If you have ever stuck your hand on a carby that is on a four or six cylinder engine you'd know they have plenty of suck. Even something as small as our 1 litre engines have plenty of suck. The flap is spring loaded also to a minor degree so ?? one would be inclined to try it in either position.

If you have the where with all to start it then you have what it takes to change it.
