Hello All,

I recently decided to add a second tail/ stop lamp to the K1100LT, mounted to rear luggage rack. Just spliced the wires from existing set up. Noticed that hazard lamp is now pretty much constantly lit ( goes out after first deploy front and back brakes as normal but then comes on again) will now only go off if brakes are engaged.

Is it just the Brake Monitoring unit getting confused since I spliced to second tail light or something more critical? if the first and no harm likely I will leave it as is ..... any advice greatly appreciated,

Ride Safe, Go the Aussies.....

Easiest way it to remove one of the bulbs and see if the light goes out. I honestly thought that if a bulb failed it came on not if there was too much current drawing.
I'd give it a go and see what happens, if it is perhaps an LED.

had a similar thing happen noel

for me it was the earth connection to the rear tail lamp,   somewhat intermittent

a clean up of the lamp housing solved the issue

I have a feeling that the current monitored to the lamps must equal a certain amount ...but not less
so when the tail lamp became corroded ....and later when it became a bad filament and low out put ...bloody globes

the bmu lamp came on

same goes for the brake lamp

I guess the same for the indicators

there seems to be 3 sensors - circuits in the bmu  so surmising... tail ...brake ...and indicators

deoxit ..is a great product for cleaning up connections

good luck !

Yes, it's 3 sensors, Charlie.......front brake, rear brake and tail.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the other hand, I would guess that it isn't so good idea to pull more
current through the BMU than it's designed for.

That's not the hazzard lamp, its the bulb fail warning light.
The BMU monitors as Inge said, the tail and brake lamps in conjunction with the front and rear brake switches.
Indicators are monitored and controlled by the Flasher Control Unit

Excellent,  thanks for clearing up the actual warning light for me. so, if all actual stop lamps and indicators are working correctly it is either a bad earth or the fact that I am now drawing more current from the system since I mounted secondary tail/brake light unit which is causing BMU to activate bulb fail lamp to come on?

+1

The BMU can be removed if you want to run more wattage but you'll need to jump the connections in the base to ensure continuity in the tail and stop circuits.

The BMU does not monitor the indicators that is done by the flasher relay which will flash quickly if a bulb is out.
The red light in the centre section does act as a bulb to monitor the Hazard flasher if it is fitted.

Or add a micro relay for the extra tail lamp....unless it's a low consuming LED.

Yes quite right then why the hell did BMW put a double triangle which is the international symbol for hazard lights in it. Well I suppose any mob who calls a speedo a tacho has got to be a bit strange.  Ah Ha I am thinking of my car that has the double triangle in a rectangular red lamp and the indicator lights on the dash also flash.

To make your confusion complete.........early K's did have a bulb behind the
double triangle in the switch.

It caught me out at first but the symbols for hazard sw and BMU warning lamp are only very slightly different... so don't sulk too hard Rick

thanks to all for the advice. I think I kinda got it now. if I leave it as is and live with the BMU light staying on it should not cause any real  harm right? or not?

It does mean there is a problem. I have had a similar experience to what Charlie was talking about, it was a failing bulb that was working but not good so I changed it and all was good.
