I know that there has been a lot written on this topic. I can't seem to find an important bit information. I bought a kit from local (ish) supplier. At re-assembly time, the oil seal insertion went well, and (I thought) the water seal insertion went well.

Eventually bolted the water impeller down. The spacer between the impeller and the pressed metal housing of the water seal seemed to be too long. (There was about a 2mm gap between the end of the impeller shaft and the "seat" of the spacer.) Bit the bullet and tightened it home, "crushing" or putting pre-load on the spring within the pressed metal housing.

The impeller seemed v.difficult to turn. Conversation with guru Rick G indicated that it was normal-ish to be firm to turn, but it's a v.subjective matter. I thought it was too tight.

Anyway, bolted it all back together, started filling up with coolant, and almost an instant solid drip, drip, drip from the weep hole. Bugger!!

During the re-installation session a hammer was not used at any stage. Everything was pressed in or pulled in v.gently. What did I do wrong? Should there be any pre-load on the spring. I've ordered another replacement seal kit from Motobins, including a new spacer.

One thing I did do was after the impeller blade was bolted home, I un-did it again, to measure the height of the seal above the floor of the housing (8.0mm) and then bolted it up again.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I'm expecting the replacement seals by the end of the coming week.

Cheers, Rickmeister.

Hi
I rebuilt mine last year and was pretty thorough with my research. Some relevant tips I have is to remove all of the old ceramic seal from the old pump. I couldn't figure out why the new seal was not seating properly and was fortunate to have the owner of our local bmw repair shop take one look at my pump and say the the old seal was not completely removed. I purchased some pick tools to extract the remnants and it was straight forward to clean and reinstall from that point.

Here is a video of a k1100 pump rebuild that might serve to help
Hope this helps

Good luck

G'day! You'll all be pleased to know that the Yellow Beast is back on the road, sans leaks!! Learnt a bit with this latest session.

Mistake 1: Make sure that the replacement kit is complete, not missing a replacement (shorter) spacer.

Mistake 2: When pulling the shaft through the the water seal, using a longish bolt and nut and washer, to wind the shaft through...do not use the socket that was used to press the seal into the housing, and try to pull the shaft through with the centre bit of the seal unsupported. Use a smaller washer, and pull the shaft through against the centre (rotating) bit of the seal only. When the shaft is through, then use the spacer to fully pull the shaft home.

Also, when all else fails, read the instructions!!! In hindsight, it's not that difficult.

It's also amazing that the original kit from Western Australia cost me $69 Aussie sheckels, and WITHOUT a replacement spacer, whilst the kit from Motobins in the UK cost me $59 Aussie sheckels, landed to my front door. The current exchange rate is about 43p/$.

Rickmeister.
