Sorry Tom (and Smithy) but that is Bathurst weekend. Must stay on couch.
That is something I have not done and would love to see someone else do it, but, you know, Bathurst.

Perhaps Tom could move the TV to the shed for the day?

The best part of the Bathurst race is the last 5 laps, as these day's the amount of safety cars for small incidents turns the race into a last 5 lap sprint. It should be a good day watch the race down some beers and fix a bike, it doesn't get better than that.

Thanks Charlie and Smithy, It will be a great day. The rear engine seal etc. is on the way and a TV will be installed in the shed. ( don't know where) and the Goulburn bike will have the gearbox, clutch and intermediate housing removed by the time Smithy arrives. This gives us more time for the race. Looking forward to it. Just a matter of getting some order into the shed.... Cheers Tom

G'day All, You are dead right Bill. The shed is now in an utter state of disorder. Was going great, Got the final drive ,drive shaft, gear box out and all was good until it was time to undo the bolts in the intermediate housing. A few of the torx bolt heads had already been stripped and I managed to strip a couple more...they were tight. Any suggestions as to how to remove these bolts?? Also , is there any reason these bolts cannot be replaced with allen key head bolts if the heads are of the same size??  Thanks muchly in advance. Tom

I haven't pulled a K down that far, so I'm not familiar with the actual construction. If the heads are drilled off, is there enough left after housing removal to grip with a stud remover or vice grips? (After applying some penetrating oil and waiting.)

Re Allen head bolts, I can't see any problem as long as they don't foul anything in the area. For that matter, even a hex head bolt, again as long as it doesn't foul anything. (As I said, not familiar with the internals of that part of a K.)

Apart from that, really the only issue to consider is to use a torque wrench when reassembling, as always with a steel bolt into aluminium alloy.

Regards,

Bill

Hi Tom
Try one of these Irwin Bolt Removers attached to a hammer drill.
Available from bunnings cheaper than ebay.
You can also get smaller sizes with ¼" hex shank

Looks like it might work better with an air rattle gun rather than a hammer drill. Might look for a set.

Hey Tom, if your having trouble just wait until I get there and I might be able to drive the next size torx socket into it and hit it with a persuader and see if it loosens. Don't try and remove them if you haven't got torx sockets. I'll bring down a good set of torx bolts with me, to replace the shit ones.

You can put standard Allen head bolts back in there - I did - IMHO BMW really dropped the ball when they chose to fit Torx to that one place only. Another tip to get Torx out when the edges start to round off: hammer in the relevant-sized Allen bit. Just make sure it's good quality (Snap-On, Teng, Makita, Bahco, etc.) so that it cuts a good socket for itself. In that case I beat seven bells out of a Teng allen bit; the Torx came out and there was hardly a mark on the Teng.

Thanks Dai and Craig, methinks a trip to the nut and bolt place is in order to get some allen key headed bolts to replace those torx bolts. Craig, I always fins pulling things to bits the easier part of the project, so the putting together bit will need your know how and skill. Cheers Tom

I wasn't expecting to be bringing the bike back on the ute. I was having a great ride on a top morning until I got to Gloucester and things went pear shaped. The bike lost all drive, it can get gears but still wont drive in those gears, clutch works fine but there is a grinding noise coming from the gearbox when in gear and the wheel is turned , I suspect it could have striped some splines I will check it out tomorrow. I would have liked to have been there to help with the spragg, I'm sure you'll get it all back together with no problems Tom.
I'm lucky to have a wonderful wife that travelled 3 hours in the ute to collect me, while I waited in the air-conditioned comfort of the Gloucester bowling club drinking ales, thanks Kay. What a suck hole I am!

Not a good look for a K, Yes the project bike Gaz

G'day All, the spragg came out easily enough and Bill was reluctant to take it apart so we soaked it in petrol for a while and gave it a bit of a scrub with a toothbrush. Reassembled it into the inter. housing. Temporarily bolted the housing and the gearbox on,fitted the starter motor, applied 12v, and tested the spragg which operated successfully on 1st push of button. Thanks to all for help especially Smithy and Bill. Now in process of reassembling the whole thing. Will keep you posted. Cheers Tom

Sensible to not take it apart if it is working ok, but if there was a need, we would have proceeded.

More importantly, Tom and I discussed the things that need to be done to sort out all the country's problems.
The conclusion was that Tom and I would be the best benevolent dictators that money could buy. Smithy, you could have been part of the triumvirate if your steed hadn't let you down. For the want of a horse . . . Razz

Sensible not to dismantle the sprag clutch if you dont have to. All those little tiny small springs and sprags are a bugger to get back in place. All I did with mine was wash it, then wash it again etc until there was no more dirt. Surprising how much crap came out. Works like a new one now.
