You know the problem with centre stands breaking? It only happens to someone else - right?

Thanks for the offer, Waz.

I have a later K1100 (I think) stand with the straight legs and I think a spare ordinary stand as well. Just got to find time to play and install one. With reinforcing inserted, I can also MIG the old one if need be.

Bill

Looks like someone had that problem on Brick2 as well. They welded up the break and then reinforced it with a brace from the foot to the leg on both sides. It looks like the sidestand also broke at some point. Unfortunately they made a crap job of the welds, so it's going to meet the scrap bin. I was lucky enough to get a complete K1100 setup for £30 off ebay.

A closer view of the break.
Oh, no not my baby Img_0216
Obviously cracked for a while before the break.

All fixed. See how my skilled welding re-shaped the legs?  Very Happy

The leverage of the straight leg works much better for putting it on the centre stand.

I took off the top box to clear some room for working on the stand, and look what I found!

Oh, no not my baby Img_0218

More of my skilled welding required.

Not just the Blue Old Bike that has luggage carrier cracks.  Sad

Bill, does the K1100 stand fold up into the rubber stopper the same as the K100 stand?

Thanks for that Bill. I might keep an eye out for a K1100 stand rather than refurbish the original centre stand on my K75 which needs some attention.

I found mine on eBay last year, thinking I could more easily shorten it for the short shock mod to the bike and therefore not have to lift it as high (easier to put on centre stand).

When it arrived, I saw that the lift lever is attached to the very bottom of the leg, so shortening was not as easy as I thought it might be. Sat in the hobby area since then. (in-joke for those not at Guyra last month.)

When I dismantled this morning, I had 2 spare K100 stands and the K1100 to choose from.

Chose the K1100 one, and am quite happy. As I said, leverage is better than the K100 one. Also, the K1100 has grease nipples. One pivot a bit worn, as were the loops at the top of the legs. I can engineer a better fit, but more trouble than it is worth. Applied marine grease to the nipples (deals with road/rain water better) and now is all good.

Grease nipples can be easily added to the K100 version if you can drill a hole and tap it to fit a nipple.

It turned out that it wasn't quite as simple as first thought. While everything happily sat where it should when stands were retracted, there was a small interference between the K100 side stand and the K1100 centre stand when retracted.

The result was that whichever was retracted last would happily come down, but it would stop the other from moving until the first was deployed.

Fortunately, only a small bit of surgery where the red oval is in the image
Oh, no not my baby Dscn0610
has removed the part that interfered with the centre stand.
(Cleaned and painted while dismantled.)

When reassembled, all will be well - or it had better be!

Bill
