Checking the bike over prior to its MOT tomorrow I noticed that the rear brake light would not come on until the front brake light had first been activated, bike static on the stand. Normally when I ride of I activate both brakes to clear the red triangle, probably applying the front first. Is this normal? John

The warning triangle needs both brake switches activated to go out. doesn't go out on just one.

But I never noted that the rear brake light didn't work until the front was activated. Makes me wonder is the rear switch faulty because my rear switch went faulty and it would clear the triangle but not make the brake light activate. Then it stopped clearing the red triangle.

By force of habit over many years before I ever take a bike [or car for that matter] out I use both front and rear brakes to make sure they are working as in have hydraulic pressure and no air.

Normal - no.

As far as I can tell, the front brake and rear brake switches are connected in parallel to the bulb monitoring unit, so it doesn't matter which brake is operated first to make the brake light circuit.

As Olaf says, you need to operate both brake levers to make the warning triangle go out (or start flashing, if you have ABS, until the ABS speed sensor does it's thing when you move off).

Out of curiosity, I went out to the garage to check...

Gretel:

  • ignition on, front brake applied - brake light illuminated.
  • rear brake applied - brake light illuminated and warning triangle starts flashing

ignition off

  • ignition on, rear brake applied - brake light illuminated.
  • front brake applied - brake light illuminated and warning triangle starts flashing

Heidi:

  • ignition on, rear brake applied - brake light illuminated.
  • front brake applied - brake light illuminated and warning triangle starts flashing

ignition off

  • ignition on, front brake applied - brake light illuminated.
  • rear brake applied - brake light illuminated and warning triangle starts flashing

Sounds like you have a dirty rear brake switch connection - giving sufficient continuity to clear the bulb monitoring unit, but not enough to take the higher current needed to illuminate the brake light. Again, just as Olaf describes his previous failure.

Good luck

The brake light switch for front and rear brakes and for clutch/starter are the same so you could swap one to check.
