Hi Guys, is it possible to change the fairings of an Rs to an LT's fairings and still be able to use all the things in the fairings like the fuel meter and so on?

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum.!

As far as I know you can use the instruments but not 100% certain. The panel for the LT fairing has circular cut outs marked on the rear for drilling to suit the temperature/fuel gauges.

But to do the change you need a few RT/LT parts: to change the handlebars, impact pad [switches should be same], longer front brake hose, longer clutch cable [not sure about accelerator/throttle cable].

I've recently changed mine but the other way round. RT to RS. That was relatively simple because things like the switch block wiring and brake and cluch switch wiring I just tucked in under the tank but you will probably need to source those secondhand as you'll need them to be longer to accommodate the higher bars.
Clutch, idle (choke) and throttle cables as well as the top brake line to the steering head will also need to be replaced.

Plenty of info on the forum about mounting and wiring in aux. instruments like temp and fuel etc. Some fuel senders are not adaptable to a fuel guage. Depends which model you have.

Finding and fitting a decent set of fairings for your later model could be a challenge. IMO, you could be better off to sell up and buy an LT.

Cheers

Hi guys, thanks alot for the advice. Will try to talk to my motorshop and see if could find all that here. so far i've not seen a LT in Cambodia now. So most likely will have to import a LT fairing in.

I have RT and LT. Fairing same on them, including panels etc etc. Knee pads differ but are interchangeable and the vented ones are nicer in winter!!. You may have to drill the holes for the fuel and temp gauges but the cut outs are marked.

Just watch that the LT may have ABS but the front hose from the lever seems to be same on both.

The switch wire is the same length for either RS or LT.  All you need to change is choke, throttle  and clutch cables and the brake hydraulic line from the master cylinder to the steering stem.

Yes, you need the RT or LT handlebar as well.

If you get an LT handlebar it may come from one with heated grips. If it does you just cut the ends off to make a smooth end. So any K100RT or K100LT handlebars will do.

When you are doing the change you may have to be pulling the wiring out from under the gas tank to suit the new positions of the switchgear so take off the tank and do it carefully and use cable ties if needed. You also need cable ties for holding the wiring to the handlebars.

Make sure all works before putting tank back, including trying to turn over the engine. It wont fire because no fuel but it will tell you that your clutch switch and switch gear is properly connected....

While you have the fairing off is a good time to do service and so on.

Hi Piseth,
I’ve just changed my faring from RS to LT.
If you change the handle bars you’ll have to change all wiring, cables and brake hose, due to the cable length being shorter on the RS than LT.

The bracket that holds the instruments need changing, they are different angles to suit the different riding positions.

Not sure if the wiring for the horn and indicators need changing due to the different positions, I re-wired mine because it needed it and didn’t pay any attention to any differences. But I think they are different lengths.

As for the upper faring, the main bracket from the headstock to the main light is different and will need changing as well as the brackets either side of the frame downtube to the side of the upper faring there are slightly different.

The fairing lower, the brackets that bolt on the engine to the faring need changing,

If your running extra lights instrument’s and goodies, you’ll have to change the alternator to the 50 amp one off the LT so your battery stays charged.

Everything is interchangeable and is easy to do,

I found the difference to be good, I can go for hours more riding before I need to stop for a rest, you’re a lot warmer, you don’t get as wet in the rain and I found the bike manoeuvres easer and handles better, I suppose because centre of balance has changed due to the different riding position.

Hope this helps

The wire length on the switch blocks is the same for all model K100 and K75, the K1100s are also the same except for the plug design.

Ah! That's explains why the wires on both of my Ks have been far too long. In the absence of any other information I'd assumed that at some point in their life they'd been changed. Thanks Rick.

Ok you will need all the RT/LT fairings, outer, new sprider (the K100 and k1100 rt/lt ones are different too)
the fairing inners and pockets. Lower liners, RT/LT handlebards and longer brake lines possibly. your clutch might be too short too and the wires as previously stated. If there are not many in Cambodia it may be due to the heat in the summer. The RT fairing is hotter. You can do away with the lowers and just use the top fairing. If you do that consider shortening it Like Charlie99 has done on his bike. You can also still use the Radiator Shroud if you make a lower bracket for it.

Lets have some pictures please!

Thanks 88KE. Noted on all points. now i might have difficulty to find the LT/RT fairings here. i think only a few was imported in. and probably those guys have strip the fairings and thrown them off. Lets see what i can do. Or maybe see if i can import in the LT bike itself
