Don't remember the part number, but that's a Google search for you, but there are BMW shims (made for BMW cars) for the Brembo that go between the piston and the pad, and when properly greased they eliminate the squeal. Worked on my '85. Very Happy

librarian,
Sure would be good to know where you got the shims. My 85 brakes squeal terribly.

You can buy a set of universal brake pad shim for cars and snip them to fit the backs of your brake pads, but keeping them aligned to the pads might be an issue. Or, alternately, carefully apply some semi-liquid automotive 'anti-squeal' compound. Also, cleaning the scale and rust that builds on the piston surfaces and the backs of the pads will often reduce the noise. I also bevel the edges of the surface of the pads and lightly scour the contact surfaces.

I try not to squeeze the brake lever tenderly but apply it firmly when coming to a stop (other than on loose gravel, of course) and this seems to help as they seem to 'glaze' a bit with gentle use. The inexpensive ICER pads from Motobins are a soft compound pad, have decent enough 'feel', don't squeal very much as compared to some EBC, Ferodo, the OEM pads and others, and more importantly haven't scored the brake discs over more than a year's hard use at both ends. If I had some extra money laying about I'd find a local source for the excellent Dunlopad. I used them in both my K1200S and my R1150R with never a problem.

Hi Yankeeone,
Your friendly local Mercedes Dealer can supply for a quite reasonable sum a 120 gram or 4.2 oz. container complete with brush in the lid, of Bremsenpaste part number A001 989 47 51, that is the magic brake squeal paste.
Regards,

Thanks TWB and K-Bike.
I will clean out the dust, bevel the edges and scour the pads. I will also get some Bremsenpaste and apply that.
I'll let you know how it works.
I'll also be more aggressive in applying the brakes.
Guess I have been too gentle while learning to ride the K. It's new to me.
As usual, this forum has been a great help to me in learning about the K bike.
Thanks again.

Word of warning that should be obvious to all on the list but for anyone who comes later do NOT (and I am shouting) get the Brensenpaste on the friction side of the pad otherwise the results will startle you when you try to stop affraid

Thanks for that warning. I just ordered the Brensenpaste yesterday. They did not have any but ordered it.
Give us a hint as to the results of your warning - no stopping or sudden stopping?

To illustrate the point further in case it's missed, the object is to (not slather, just coat) the paste against the metal backing of the pad because its properties help reduce the high-speed or high-frequency vibration that can occur when hydraulic forces apply pressure to the pistons which push against the back of the pads. Those squeals are often just vibration happening, and the paste acts as a cushion, of sorts. It's not always a glaze on the disc and pads. So, once again boys and girls, it goes between the piston and the back of the pads.

I have seen a customer's car brought in after the customer decided to perform this service on his own vehicle. He was shaking as he drove it back to the workshop, wondering why his brakes 'felt very, very mushy'. The blue goo had oozed all over the calipers, discs and pads. What a mess.

I am currently experiencing the same squealing problem with both front and rear brakes. What was the outcome of using the paste? Did it work? Any new insight into this?

I`m using some thin rubber foil to avoid the squeal, this rubber foil is made for this purpose.
It`s should be fixed on the rearside of the pads and have one adhesive side, and because of
that it function best on new pads or well cleaned used ones.
Don`t know if it`s avaiable at your place tough.

Thanks Inge. I will look for it as it seems it would be less messy. I've been giving this a little more thought as my situation may be unique. Both front and rear brakes are squealing but I can make it go away by applying and holding the brakes on for a few seconds at speed. This leads me to believe it is not vibration. The bike has less than 16,000 kms on it and the pads would be original so I think would be hard and brittle given they are 25 years old. I think I will live with the squeal for a few more months and then replace the pads (including the lube or rubber foil) over our winter.

I worked for Suzuki in Oz for a whilein the 70s and at the time we had a really bad problem with the twin discs on the old now but new then water cooled 750s of a brake squeal. We spent many months in conjunction with the factory trying to fix the problem but only stumbled on the problem when an apprentice hammered the axle thru and damaged the bearings, when we replaced them with new after the customer complained of a noise and the brakes stopped squealing,

Apparently the bearings were a bad batch and when replaced all was OK.

Moral of the story check the front wheel bearings as well.

Doesn't the rubber backing tape destroy the "sharpness" of the brake?

I have  the same problem. Never had it with oem parts earlier, but now, upon installing green (sintered?) brembo pads, the squealing is enough to make childeren reach for the ears. Sad

I'm gonna try a piece of ondinary duct-tape to the back of the pads, but i'm afraid no backing will help, as I fear the green pads are just to hard, and eating up my disks.

I'll let you know.

I haven't had the problem on the K, but on many cars (mine and customers) I've used the lubricant successfully.

As earlier posters wrote, it goes between the pad back and the piston. Best way is to apply sparingly to the piston circles.
In addition, a small smear where each brake pad contacts the caliper, and if necessary, where the pads touch the pins that hold them in place.

The squeal is the vibration of the pad against anything it contacts while the brake is being applied.

Bill

Duct tape will just wear away very quickly and its not standard procedure. Bits may dislodge and interfere with your braking just when you need it the most. Anti-squeal paste is the best thing to use and sparingly. Its sticky so it doesn't migrate to other brake parts.
