from the MCC of NSW:

The Hon Duncan Gay today announced at the launch of Motorcycle Awareness Week, that helmets tested and certified under European Standard ECE R22.05 can be used in NSW once the ACCC has mandated their use. He has written to the Federal Govt requesting that the ACCC moves quickly to adopt the European standard. Thanks to Mr Gay and NSW Govt.

Well there it is one foot forward, lets hope we can survive the 3steps back that they are notorious for.

Might be a problem for people riding interstate though if what is legal in NSW is not legal in the other states.

Now we wait....will helmet prices go down or will there be reasons found for not dropping prices? If the helmets don't need extra testing it should be cheaper.

They might, but Australian Standards still exist and they'll still test for sale over all of Australia. I cant see an importer bringing in euro helmets just for the NSW market.
It will be legal to buy and use euro spec helmets from overseas now though. Should be a saving that way.

I thought Victoria already had Euro compliance for Helmets, we are just catching up to them or that would be allowing the Vic Riders to ride legal in our state.

Cripes...who even polices these things, or is it self policing to keep your insurers to heel?

This is what we have with a federation of states that each set there own legislation.  Mostly much the same, but there are a few things where you need to know the differences if you travel about.

The stupidest one lately for motorcyclists is helmet cams, in one state they are booking riders with cameras on their helmets for an illegal attachment to the helmet, in the neighbouring state police riders are using them themselves.

There is some confusion with helmet laws between the states as some are out of date and its not actually possible to comply with the law as they refer to outdated standards, making a current helmet technically illegal.  To me its mostly just paranoia though, I'm not hearing of many if any people getting booked with helmet offences and though people keep talking about "your insurance won't pay up if you ...", I'm yet to hear of an example of that actually happening to anyone.  I wrote a bike off back in 2010, the insurer didn't care/didn't ask what helmet I was wearing(though they paid for new one happily) or anything else, they just paid the claim with no weird questioning.
