I am currently running a "modified" final drive on my outfit.
The mod entailed replacing the standard crown wheel bearing with a tapered bearing.
I have been changing the FD oil each time the engine oil was changed ie. usually 5000 km intervals, or prior to the commencement of each trip. The FD has done 22000Km since the mod.
At each oil change I have checked the old oil and detected no "sparkles" or metal residue.
I am just getting ready to go away again and thought I would check the FD so jacked the bike up and grabbed the rear wheel at 6 & 12 o'clock positions. I can detect some movement but am uncertain if minor movement is ok or at which point it becomes excessive. I get no movement when grabbed from the 9 & 3 o'clock positions.
Thoughts????

If the final drive bearing was worn then it would move in any position. I would have a look at the swinging arm bearings. Check if the wheel and swinging arm move sideways, grab the wheel at the back only and check for movement.

Also, have a look at the small taper roller bearing, they sometimes become loose on their alloy spigot.

Paul.
