HI Guys ,
Just to check, is any oil filter of a car that is able to fit in our K100rs?
i have big problem finding K100rs filters over here. Or any filters of other BMW Bikes that can be used. In fact over here, they import the bikes in but they did not import the parts over. Learned my lesson Mad.  Also the brake pads, any idea what i should buy? cause my mech is telling me that he will take the old pad down, and will give to someone to weld the pads on.

Hi, I can't image what it's like not being able to pop out to my local dealer and get the parts I need.  Have you tried online to get things delivered, somewhere like motorworks.co.uk or motobins.co.uk?  Not sure if they post to Cambodia or whether the postal charges make it unfeasible.  Worth a try.

Good luck in your search for parts.

Hey man from Cambodia!

MAHLE OiI Filter OC 91 should be the correct filter.
http://www.amazon.com/MAHLE-Original-OC-91-Filter/dp/B0068O1CF4

Wait until somebody else confirmes my suggestion!

Cheers

The sump nut crush washer is a fairly standard item. When I was in France in 2014 I spotted a bag of these washers in a supermarket and bought them. They suited Renaults and Peugeot/Citroens and fit.

The O ring should be replaced each time......but if you carefully clean it and the groove it sits in you might get away with it. The other option if you can't get the O ring is not to remove the circular cover but to remove the sump plate since as far as I know its fitted with sealant and not a gasket. That way you can avoid buying the O ring but its a little more messy at oil change time.

Some BMW cars use the same filter but if you buy one of them you just don't get the O ring.

The seal on the oil filter should come with any make of filter you buy.

Rick's list of cross referenced oil filters is fairly complete. BTW, the Fram PH6063 (probably not available anywhere but North America) is an OEM filter in a Fram box but without the roundel. I used to import them into the US back in the '90s.

Is your '90 K100RS a 16V with 4 piston Brembos? if so, EBC FA407 is a good cross reference to start with for the front. EBC FA18 is the back pad set. These pad sets fits many other Beemers. If it's an 8V, then it's EBC FA18 all round. You might be able to secure a set of three from Valor, a Chinese company making reasonably good quality pads for a fair price (often in sets) and advertising on eBay. See the threads elsewhere on the forum. I'm using them on currently two of my bikes as are others.

Richard,

You can add a Valvoline V022 to your list. I've been using it for about six oil changes now and the engine noises are no different!! I've done about 12,000Km with them. They an equivalent to the Ryco Z418, but the tool is slightly smaller. The V022s are used in a lot of Toyota engines. The main reason I use them is that my mechanic mate gives them to me for nothin'. The tool can be purchased from a Toyota dealer, but it is a bit expensive, about $40.

Cheers, Rickmeister.

I've not had any problems changing oil filters without changing the cover o-ring. But if you need to buy one they are a standard size. You should be able to pick one up at somewhere like a bearing shop.

If you like, I could pick up a few ryco Z418 for about AU$14 each and post them to you.
PM me if you're interested and I'll get a quote for postage.

3x Z418 filters @ AU$13.90........AU$41.70
Air postage to Cambodia............AU$28.00
                                         TOTAL...AU$69.70

One more or one less would be the same postage

If you're careful with the filter cover o-ring there's a good chance you'll be able to  re-use it but Rickmiester said he has a spare one to pop into the parcel for you.

Cheers

The other day I was in SupaCheap Auto buying a Z418 and noticed there were a hell of a lot of them on the shelf.... so apparently very common. I did a search on Google to find what vehicles this filter fits and there are quite a few.
Thought it may help some to find a compatible filter from other makers.
The list is at the bottom of the page in this link.
https://www.sparesbox.com.au/oil-filter-z418-ryco

The Z418 is 86.4mm in height which only gives a few mm clearance with the cover plate so you'd just need to make sure that any filter you find is not much bigger than that. The BMW oem filter is 80.5mm

BTW that's about the cheapest I've seen for those filters. Their 5lit oil prices aren't too bad either with free freight and if you buy the 10 or 20lit drum it becomes very cheap for quality oil.

I have found that the AC Delco PF53 oil filter fits the K bike.  They fit a wide range of vehicles made by GM and Toyota and are readily available in the U.S. for a reasonable price.  I get mine at Carquest Auto Parts under their house brand and have Paid under $4.  You will need a different filter wrench from the Bosch as the PF53 uses a 74mm/15 indent wrench.

I have used AC and Carquest filters for 25 years now, and have routinely gotten 250,000 trouble free miles from the vehicles I've used them in.  In fact, I had a 2001 Honda Accord that now has over 500,000 miles on it.  I am confident that these filters will do the job in my bricks.

Oil/filter change intervals are more important than what brand oil or filter you use.  Cheap oil and filters are better than more expensive if they allow you to change them more often.

While on the subject of filters, I was a member of a hydraulic power engineering society back in the 80's.  I can't say what the filters  are like today, but in the late 80's when the society ran tests on about 30 brands of oil filters for hydraulic systems it was found that with regards to filter efficiency(beta) and dirt holding capacity the filters sold by K-Mart and Sears were the best and Fram was the worst.  It's been a long time since the tests, and a lot can change, but be aware that paying a lot doesn't necessarily buy a lot.

A bit more random rambling on filters.  Anyone who has been involved in manufacturing should know that tooling cost amortization is an important cost factor as well as the ability to implement automation.

Volume is the key to getting these cost inputs as low as possible.  Hence the bigger the company, the greater the volume and the lower these costs will be per unit.

Also, with items like filters that directly impact warranty claims, I think you can be reasonably sure that a large OEM is going to be pretty careful about the design and the quality of the parts they are using, especially when it is their name or the name of one of their subsidiaries on the box.

From a marketing point of view, house brands are usually a safe bet because large retail chains can get better pricing from manufacturers, and have an interest in selling better than average quality under their name because the perception of quality in one product affects the perceived quality of their entire product line, and the house brand is often used to drive customer traffic to their retail locations.  Hence, house brands like Carquest and NAPA can usually be relied upon to provide competitive quality at a good price.

Specialist companies may provide better design and quality, but their products are out there on the curve of diminishing returns, and often have to use a lot of expensive marketing to get noticed in the marketplace.  Because of these factors, the price performance ratio is normally lower that it is for the equivalent products from the "big boys".
