Hi guys damnest thing yesterday on my new to me K1100LT, pulled in to refuel as I am still confirming the honesty of the fuel gauge when I found my fuel cap lock spun right round 3 times and I could not unlock the cap to put fuel in. Managed to limp home I know how far I can go safely now and worked out how to get the tumbler out. So guys and girls open up your cap workingsFuel Cap stuff Img_0863
Fuel Cap stuff Img_0862
give it a clean and lube it up.

Cheers Klompy

Shame you sell stuff and always need it again soon after...doh

Check out Sidecar Paul's option for drilling the cap.

Saves losing the lock etc.

It saved my fuel cap earlier this year. I had this information in my head when it happened and just went for the drill.

All you need to remember is the 22-25mm dimension. The post shows how it works and Pauls advice and that of others is just go drill the hole and plug it. Dismantle the cap as in take off the three screws and clean it out. Drilling it on the bike is ok too because the swarf doesn't go in the tank-take cap off and then remove the 3 screws and clean it out. In my case the key would not turn so I cleaned the barrel etc and put it all back together.

The end pins have sheared off of the tumbler cylinder so you have nothing left to rotate the slider cam.  i had this happen to me and made a key to open the tank--didn't know what was in there at the time nor about Paul's secret drill hole which is a brilliant solution.

Am I correct in believing that this is not a problem if one does not lock the fuel cap?

Klompy, while you're in the fuel cap frame of mind you can get fuel cap overhaul kits (seals, o rings) from Munich Motorcycles in Perth. See here if you are keen.

Cheers

That's not the way the cap on my '85 model works.  Depressing the center button with a fingertip pops the cap up and open.  In fact, I've never even tried to lock that cap since I've own the machine.

You have the early type, the later caps lock when they are closed and the key is turned to open them. They are not very common as they didn't last long and were replaced with the later type.

The early K's as yours is is the more powerful model as later they were detuned to satisfy the US market.

Thought you would like to know this.

The problem with the early caps is that, after rain, the assembly fills with water and when the cap is opened, the water flows directly into the tank.

The later caps have a ridge that deflects the water towards the drain hole.

I thought there was a recall to replace the push button caps?

Paul.

I have the original cap on the original bike. No problems here as it rarely rains. Does this mean that the cap is worth more than the bike?

He's in England Blakey and I know where he lives but it costs a bundle more than a fiver to go to Dubbo so it looks like you still own it Stan. Laughing

Watch it Blakey, I am back and I am keeping my very valuable cap safe by LOCKING it onto my bike. Besides the cap is black... not your colour, but on a red bike which is your favourite bike.

I figure everyone should either memorise this dimension or else drill the hole and either plug it with a screw and neoprene washer or tape over it. I used no parts at all in sorting mine out after the barrel refused to turn. Was I thankful for SidecarPaul's posting on this.

If you were on a trip then you might end up using a small screwdriver through the hole to open the cap but it's better than being stuck or stranded.

Sometime we will get to meet. Definitely owe you a beer because the cost of parts if I had not drilled that hole would have been close to a ferry ticket price!!!

I fancy weekend camping on the mainland some time and maybe make it coincide with one of yours if I can get some Eccentric Kompany to Kome along for the ride.
