hi guys

when i went fo a ride today my bike stalled under accceleration

after 2-3-min. it started up again but i could not drive under ful power and it got worse ,to the point that i limped home on idle.

i assumed it was a plugged fuelfilter but that seemed o.k.

there is a copious stream of fuel spraying around in the tank when starting

it started up after i reinstalled the fuelfilter and idled nice but stalled again whe i try to ride it

now it wont start at all

any ideas ???

i have no idea how this sytem supposed to work

This is an article from IBMWR related to the Throttle Position Switch:

On a journey the engine was suddenly cutting in and out periodically like dirt in the fuel.
After trying changing the spark plugs and the HT leads without any result, I tried to remove the plug to the butterfly switch----and suddenly all problems where gone!!!

When I got home I carefully broke the switch a part and it showed out that it was full of water.

After drying out the house and cleaning the switch contacts (in fact the butterfly switch consist of only one microswitch for indication of closed throttle and one larger switch for full throttle) I rebuild the butterfly switch and sealed it with silicone glue, put on the plug again and it has been OK ever since.

The problem seems to have been that the water had made a shortcut so the computer was thinking that I have closed the throttle ore was driving with more than full throttle and it therefore made a cut-off to avoid over driving the engine.

But the strange thing is that the bike is running perfectly well without the butterfly switch connected?

Do you see a relation between your problem and this one?

Have you checked if its got water in the tank Kurnow? As the water could be below the pick up and every time you take off the water level increases towards the pick up its getting more water than fuel so will start coughing .

Just a thought
cheers Tony

inside tank is clean no water or dirt,no dimming lights, when it breaks down its like running out of fuel but there is plenty of fuel, when i restart it stutters then revs cleanly then stutters again, then limp home again in 2nd gear, then next day ride to work 22 miles no problem ,then riding home again a couple miles down the road it will break down again it will always restart but its limp home again time.....? thanks Jim

Follow the troubleshooting chart in the downloads section and logically check off the items one by one. Pay attention to seeing if all four spark plugs are getting a firing signal with Hall sensor problems one pair of plugs could be failing to get proper firing impulses. That said, work through the chart and I am sure you will find the answer.

Sounds a bit like what happened both times when my K100 fuel pump died.
It's an expensive item to replace just in case but keep it in mind.

kir ....just a thought ....if you have an 85 or later model check the tank connector under the drivers right hand side cover ....this connection powers the fuel pump and has found to be an issue ....the socket part of the connector either corrodes or gets loose connections .....undo it clean it up (maybe even slightly crimp the socket part so that the pins make a positve contact) ...happened to me for a while till i found it .

but from what your saying about fuel spraying around in the tank ...sounds like you either have a blockage in the fuel feed, return line , fpr , or just plain ratty fuel lines inside the tank ....loosing presure holding ability ...i would suggest (given that one of the metal fuel lines hasnt cracked ((possibility)) ...to replace the internal lines with the right rubber sae 30 r 10 which is rated for full imersion in unleaded fuel ...many arent ....replace the retaining hose clips and see if you can get fuel flowing out the return line to the tank (extend the pipe to the top of the fuel tank so it just returns in the filler )

hope fully you havent got gummed up fuel down in the injector path

this is just a step in the diagnosis ...and which will hopefully point you in the right direction

Yes, I was also wondering about the swirling fuel. That seems a bit unusual. Had a similar swirling on my RT and found that the metal line in the tank as it came off the fuel pump rubber hose had a crack and was allowing fuel to escape, reducing fuel pressure and reducing performance. Came about after I changed the fuel filter, too rough around that area I guesss. Check that closely.

thanks for the feedback guys,i will check out the hall sensors and follow the troubleshooting chart, and check the tank connector, inside tank is pristine all pipes and hoses ok swirling fuel is just the return from pressure regulator which returns fuel to the tank continuously via a check valve this is normal, if you let the fuel go down quite low, look inside tank right up at the front left, easier with fuel cap off start engine rev it and you will see this. thanks again guys i'll let you know how i get on cheers jim Very Happy

Hi Kernowbull,
Just a friendly reminder please start a new thread rather than jumping in part way through another thread which is addressing someone else's problem in case the problem and solution is different. Apart from netiquette it prevents us all forgetting what problem we are addressing and giving inappropriate responses to the first poster plus it makes the search function work better for future searches.
