Thought there was a thread on this or one that referenced it. So point me to it. But my Silver K75 has the T-screen and the rear view mirrors are on stalks. All of which works fine except that the mirrors where they mount on the stalks have loosened up with age. Yeah, everything loosens up with age. But I've tried to tighten them by applying Pliobond glue to the universal joint which works for a period. But in the garage with my bumping into things they get hit and the glue bond gets broken. And once on the road the mirrors shift around in the wind stream. And sometimes I wind up looking where I needn't be looking. Like today I was observing a bike quickly overtaking me only to realize they were in the next lane and not what I should be concerned with.

So anyway has anyone got a method of tightening up the mirrors? I'm looking for a new approach as the Pliobond glue which works for a while apparently isn't a permanent fix.

Have you tried fitting new lock nuts?

The lock nut is at the bottom  of the stem where the stem mounts to handle bars. No problem there. The mirrors themselves are fitted into a plastic holder which connects to the stem via a swivel arrangement. This is what I am referring to. The swivel tends to loosen with age. I have managed to tighten these with Pliobond glue. But as I indicated this also loosens particularly after you bump or adjust the mirror.

If you don't want to sell a kidney there are other mirrors that fit. My K75s came fitted with Triumph aftermarket mirrors which looked virtually identical to the early K75s OEM non aerodynamic mirrors.  I'm pretty sure the mirrors were made by MCS and were pretty cheap, Rob Turton of Tyres for Bikes alerted me to the fact. I replaced them with the correct ones eventually and gave the Triumph ones to a mate.

Martin, a couple of questions as we probably have different suppliers:
1.) After market Triumph Mirrors. Got any links? EME sells the mirrors (dependent on model ) from USD $35. to $91.
     https://www.euromotoelectrics.com/searchresults.asp?Search=Mirrors&Submit=
2.) Then you replaced the Triumph with correct ones and gave the Triumph to a mate. Why? What was wrong with them?

I suppose that I could kick out a hundred bucks for a brand new set. But I already have 2 pair (4) sitting in a box which work just fine except for this same issue of needing the universal tightened. Hence looking for a way to tighten them.

You could heat the mirror case, attempt to remove the mirror, then determine whether there are screws within the case that can tighten the ball/socket assembly, or you could do what this rider did and have your choice of dozens of cheaper mirrors on the Web. There are Ken Sean mirrors sold on Amazon, but there are plenty of other makes also.

There was nothing wrong with them. However the correct ones for my bike have a rounded  back and I scored the correct ones on Ebay for Emu feed.  Pictures show the back of the mirror heads. The mate I gave my mirrors to had an earlier K75s with mirrors like yours that wouldn't stay in position. I fixed them temporarily with super glue on the ball joint. There are also a couple of different arm lengths available.
Regards Martin.

The issue with many aftermarket mirrors is that the threads aren't long enough to pass through the throttle and clutch perches.

Here are the three types of BMW mirrors:

The text in the link shows a simple way to overcome that using a hex link. It is also shown in the post's photos. It's possible to tap the link to accommodate differing thread sizes.

It was 20 plus years ago when I was told my mirrors were Triumph. I've just found the site for the MCS mirrors and the model number is MU 5, I also found a price on another site $20.00 Au each. I don't know whether they are available O/S however they may ship. Au. https://www.bing.com/ck/a? Go to mirrors on their site and the BMW/Triumph mirrors are on page 5.
Regards Martin.

I see that I misinterpreted your query.

I've never seen these mirrors have that problem before and I have quite a few of them around here.  Seen a few cracks though.

Bumm appear to be the OEM.  A couple of new part numbers I have are:
  • 1911/77BVME (long stem)
  • 1911/37AVLME (rounded ones)

Alternative part numbers that Motorworks also use are:
  • HAA36021O
  • HAA13529C

Unfortunately I don't have the part number of the standard ones.

Martin,

Do you know if these are OEM Bumm ones?

Geeez Dave it was a miracle I could remember as much as I could and that they were MCS. They are based in Brissie. I do remember they were pretty good quality and virtually indistinguishable from the OEM ones. Ron has them now I'll have a look at them next time I'm over there. We have a ride planned for Saturday give me a ring if you're interested.
Moto hardware also has them

Thanks Martin,

I am away on a ride already this weekend.  Eight of us on an overnighter to Woodenbong.  One car, 'cause he is still broken from the same trip last year, a Honda, a KTM, a sidecar and the rest on BMWs along with a few apologies.
