OK my 95 k100 is leaking oil somewhere from the back left side of the engine. Can't see where from though. Any common problems that I might not know about? Also on start up she blows blue smoke for a few mins then clears up. Anything to be concerned about. Any help and advice welcomed please.

P.S I have pics but can't work out how to sort them due to being a computer illiterate monkey.

The blue smoke on start up is common if you leave the bike on the side stand. Try using the centre stand and see whether there is a difference. If it is clear then no problems as they all could blow smoke when using the side stand. It is to do with the movement of oil and the angle of the bike... oil drains to the left.

G'day shipo.

Give the area where you think the oil is leaking/weeping a good degrease and clean. Go for a ride and then see if you can find out exactly where the oil is coming from.

Gear shift lever seal?

Cam cover gasket?

Report back here.

+1.......some spray on talcum powder would make it even easier to spot the leak.

Blue smoke indicates burning oil. Sounds suspiciously like an overfilled crankcase to me. We've had a couple like this with same symptoms over the past coupla years. My crankcase was also grossly overfilled by nearly a litre when I bought my '89. No oil leaking tho but a lot of smelly oily smoke and deposits out the exhaust.
The sight glass goes cloudy and its hard to determine where the level is.

Over filling a normal upright engine has little impact but with the K it will find its way into the cylinders and out the exhaust ports and you can't find where the oil leak is coming from because you are expecting to see it weeping from a crankcase join or similar. In fact its likely coming from the end of the header pipes by your left foot.

Drain the oil well and measure 3.5lit. My guess is that you may have 1 to 2 lit excess.

a 95 k100 ????? do you mean a 95 k1100 or a 85 k100  ???  a photo of the bike and or a vin number will also help if your having trouble loading photos on to your message [ i did first of all ] there is a very helpful link that shows you how to do it step by step somebody on the forum might find it and send it to you  but if you type out a post then look up to the top of the page  see where it says you tube then go to the left  3 icons click on that and it will pop up and you can either choose to take photos from i photo or drag photos off your desktop or where ever a wait for them to load and hit install images   try it next time ok Oil leak. +1 on the spray talcum powder.

Another possible source is the breather hose just behind the airbox.  A leak there will often be accompanied by an engine that doesn't want to idle nicely or has acceleration issues.

As far as posting photos, I suspect there is a problem with some browsers or operating systems that prevents uploading to this forum.  While able to do so in the past I have not been able to upload any photos for several months now regardless of what I do.  I no longer even try.

hi INGE , have you got an axe to grind over me replying to postings now or what ??? all i asked was it  a '95 k100 or a  '95 k1100 or an '85 k100 as im sure in 1995 there was no k100's as they were producing the 1100 yeah sure it doesn't make a bit of difference whether its a k75, k100, k1100 ,k1200, as far as the oil leak is concerned you claim to be a self appointed" K" guru correct me if i'm wrong on the production dates of k100 and k1100 if not please go amuse yourself with your  furry critter and get off my back ok ciao

a good idea .75  the crank case breather could well be a good place to look at ..we have seen many cracked and not obvious at first,  breather tubes ..

as far as posting photos ... are you using windows ?  internet explorer ?

perhaps go to settings and compatibility viewing ...
mark- add this site as viewable in compatibility settings ?
worth a try ?

good luck

woodcutter ...I will remind you and all members "flaming " another member is poor behaviour and will not be tolerated

I think you better go and review the rules of the forum  found here  http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/bvogel/K100/forum-rules.htm

and ask if you could moderate your reply so its not directed at others personally  if you have some disagreement with their thoughts .

we will have a better place that wont result in name calling or anything else , as you seem to want to do too often ..

so to the messages ...think a little before responding to something you might disagree with

regards

Charlie

Hey woodcutter, don't attack Inge.

He would be the last person to call himself a guru. He knows his stuff and all of us on here appreciate his helpfulness and knowledge.

I might be mistaken, but were the valve stem seal types changed over the life of the K100/K1100 to stop the oil burning? If that is the case then Woodcutters question is genuine.

Charlie, regarding posting photos.  The machine I use now was inadvertently "infected" with Windows 10 that I can no longer uninstall and I am running the current version of FireFox 49.0.1

Prior to the Windows 10 "infection" I had no problem uploading photos from my files.   Unfortunately, I am no longer literate enough to do all the stuff to keep things compatible and functional.

I just don't bother trying to post photos here anymore.

.75

I use internet  explorer on win 10 ( ie 11 actually )

if you search you might find it buried deep down in the files  , as I did

I found it then pinned it to my task bar ...and use it rather than the Microsoft "edge" program

hope that helps

Something I have noticed re oil consumption, on my current K75s and previous other K's, if I add oil to just below the top of the sight glass it quite quickly drops to the red dot and then settles. John
