Hey everyone

Just another silly question from a newbie.................................

How do I wire up a VDO ( or other makers ) Voltmeter gauge? The OEM BMW ones are hard to find and insanely expensive here in Oz

I am electrically challenged so please be kind  lol!

Cheers
gary

Viper,
Be careful with the source of +12 volts.

When I fitted a voltmeter to my solo RS, I picked up a 12 volt supply from a point somewhere inside the relay box (I can't remember exactly where), and got a reading of only 11.2 volts. Ah, I thought, a duff battery, so I bought a new battery an guess what? Still 11.2 volts!  Embarassed

So, you need to find a fused point near the battery without any voltage drop.

Paul.

... and switched so it comes on with the ignition. Best solution is to wire the gauge through a small 12Volt normally open relay. connect one side of the contacts directly to the battery +ve, the other side to the +ve input of the meter. Connect one side of the coil to ground and the other side of the coil to a source of switched +12V. The remaining side of the meter gets grounded.

Just to add my 1.5C; I did something similar to Duck except that where he's used the black-green wire, I picked up the green wire off the back of the ignition switch. No voltage drop to worry about as it's switched directly from the battery.

I tap into the gauges connector for the separate factory fuel and temp gauges.  Seems logical to me.

I'm with Duck; there's a special connector for additional instruments under the tank, with a switched power, ground and switched light contact. All you need :-)

Connect it between earth (ground) and a switched 12v source like the grey/blue or green wire at the plug for the ignition switch.
