Hello everyone,

Is it possible to install the K 1100 LT exhaust on K 1100 RS? I am asking this also because there are much more LT exhausts to be found e.g. in eBay than those from RS, and I have to exchange the exhaust on my RS as a part of procedures to remove the power limitations which this formerly Suiss bike has - only 82 HP.

Cheers,
Tarik from Sarajevo

Exact same part on both bikes. No problem.

What Duck said, just get one with good headers.

Also have you read the post (from Sidecar Paul I think) about putting a large jubilee clip around the four header pipes to harmonise the vibration and reduce the risk of headers cracking?

I've also heard the keeping the header flange nuts properly tightened (check them at every oil change) helps avoid the dreaded header to collector cracks.

Not sure if I believe that one but it can't hurt anything to keep things properly torqued.

The swiss version has a catalyser.
If you mount a non catalyser exhaust, that won't change the power of your K11 at all.
It may also reduce the power becaus you have to keep your Lambda probe, that's screwed in the exhaust. If it's not plugged, it will be considered as default by the Motronic and the fuel injection parameters will be wrong.
So you have to change also the Motronic control unit for a non catalytic exhaust version.
And also the throttle control assy, complete ( smaller diameter for Switzerland).

Does it worth the price and the time spent for a few HP you'll never use?
Not sure...

Right now there is an exhaust for sale in eBay where the link header to collector had been strenghtened by welding:

I did not want to install the non catalyser exhaust, but non SWISS with a catalyser - e.g. coming from some motorbike sold in Germany, Austria, Italy, France etc. I want to keep the catalyser, as more and more European cities will be shutting down the town centres for bikes without a catalyser (like Paris already did).

According to this manual from German Flyingbrick forum, that relates to the Swiss version of K1 but also partially to K 1100, for bikes produced prior to 06/1993 (like mine), it is only necessary to cut the wire leading to the Pin 14 of Motronic plug, and change the idle screws on the throttle control assy. They actually don't influence the power, but the shorter ones don't get damaged easily. The Motronic units are identical for Swiss and non Swiss versions - check the RealOEM parts catalogue. But that manual tells that a part of reduction is done by the exhaust, so IT should be changed. The used ones are available for ca 130 EUR.

It may be just me but I wouldn't trust one that's been welded because that's probably a sign that's the factory weld has cracked before - and I've never heard of a reweld working long term.

YMMV.

Here's what I found in my docs
Exhaust  18121464609 : no cat, EU specs
Exhaust + cat 18321464582  : cat, EU specs
Exhaust + cat : 18121464423 cat+swiss specs
Exhaust + cat : 18121464632 cat+swiss specs
Exhaust  : 18121464319 no cat + australia specs

So you probably need the 2nd one. Here, very few BMW were sold with cat, because of the extra price and fear about this equipment. you'll probably me more lucky in Germany.

Thanks! It's a lucky fact that the police used K 1100 LT, and they were mostly delivered with full equipment including catalyser. Many were sold later at auctions, so there are still a few around

Not sure for the police in other countries, but as a former motorcyclist custom officer, I receveid in 1998 a brand new K1100LT for service.
No cat...
Yet it was a very, very rapid bike. You can't imagine how quick you can ride with 2 blue flashing lights and a siren. I probably had the world record for the Annecy lake tour in 18 minutes... What a Face

And also ideal for the slower ride - until recently, whenever there was some bicycle or marathon race, the most TV crews used K 1100 LT for their cameramen who followed the race. I guess because of the stability at low speeds

Here in the US they all have cats. It's listed as an eco- selling point in the sales literature.

Installing K 1100 LT exhaust on K 1100 RS??? K1100l10

(All of the horsepower was "sacrificed" when they detuned the fuel mapping to keep the bike at 100hp.)
