Can anybody help. I have a 1987 K100RT and need to replace the Thermostat. I have purchased a Thermostat but it did not come with the seating gasket that fits onto the actual Thermostat. BMW do not seem to have this part listed separately. I have the dealership looking into this problem with BMW. I am reluctant to fit the old seating gasket onto the new Thermostat as it is 30 years old and slightly hard. Has anybody had this problem before and does anybody know where I could purchase one. Name and address of company and if possible e-mail address. Any information would be helpful. Thanks!

As far as I can tell, the only seal in the vicinity of the thermostat is an O ring (item 4 on the Real OEM schematic).

Cooling System Thermo10

Available from both the following:

Hope this helps.

That O-ring is to seal the cap. The thermostat gasket goes under the base of the thermostat to ensure proper flow thru the t/stat valve. AFAIK they aren't, and never were, available as a separate item.
- I've always reused the gasket. On my K100naked its busted but I put it back in carefully.
- I'd say you could install the t/stat without the gasket anyway. Might take just a fraction longer to warm up in cold climates.
- Alternatively, get some cork gasket material and cut yourself a new one.

Thanks for the info. I have the 'O' Ring. Still waiting for BMW dealership to get back to me. If everything else fails will put the old gasket back on the Thermostat. Will the cork withstand the high temperature if used, concerned it might start to break up?.

I have resolved the issue relating to the Thermostat Gasket. The Thermostat that I ordered from Motorworks did not have a gasket on and it should have as it is part of the Thermostat, the same goes for the BMW Dealership which they were looking into why it did not have one on. Contacted Motorworks and they are sending me a gasket after checking their stock and stating they all have them on apologising also.   So again many thanks for you that replied to my query.

Good news. I've heard of others ordering the thermostat from other suppliers and it arriving without the gasket. I've never had to buy one. Just removed it on occasion to test.

Hi beemernug.

This topic has been moved.

The information here (which may help others) would be lost in Member's Introduction. Very Happy
