I've got an 85 K100RT and I want to remove the gas tank to put some heat proofing mods in.
I've never had an RT fairing apart and need help on how to do it.

I can't find any pictorials on line.
How do you do it?

instruction 0.5 instructs us to use an ice pick to remove the radio... Now isn't that a bit drastic....

Removing gas tank?? 44271

gerry you only need to maybe get the left lower off to remove the tank .....then you can access the fuel lines connections to the tank ...the back tank mounts can be accessed from the seat area, also the tank electrics cable .

dont forget to remove the side covers (just below the seat ) its kinda hard to lift the tank with them still holding it all in place .....embarased grin

hope this helps

thats one of the reasons i havent put mine all back together... just yet ....

I am routed to a site describing how to remove the panels, not the gas tank by this link.

As the author of that link, I can tell you that on an 85 K100 the rear of tank is held to the frame by a bolt, not rubber grommets like the later bikes.Remove that bolt in the center at the rear of the tank and lift it up. To get the tank all of the way off you'll need to remove the screws that hold the left lower to the radiator panel and then remove the left lower in order to disconnect the fuel tank connector at the left front corner of the tank as well as the two fuel lines.

And somebody needs to learn the difference between an ice ax and an ice pick. Very Happy

What month '85? There s a difference between early and late.

Is there a bolt holding down the rear of the tank? (Early)
Alternately is it resting on two frame mounts at the rear (look under the rear of the tank) - Late

I have an 1985RT

take the inner side panels off, two screws at top and one under neath the very bottom of the lower side fairings. disconnect the fuel lines and the tanks electrical connector should be right side. take out the two circlips that hold the tank's pins to the frame and its rubber grommets and f$%^ing pull up hard  Laughing

Hope that helps,   don't know which time of the year mine is , just know that I love her.

And you only need the ice pick to remove the radio.

Which is not fitted on the RT models, its on the LT models.

And.....its strongly advised if you have never done it, to replace the fuel lines as they go hard with age and after you put it all back together will likely crack and leak fuel under pressure...put them back about 1 1/2" longer and you can access radiator coolant cap and the electrical relay box without removing the tank.

I have found that it is necessary to give the tank a push forwards before trying to lift it up.

I guess that in use, the tank naturally settles a little bit back hard against the rear of the frame mounts. With the tank pins catching on the frame mounts the extra friction will make it a little harder to lift up. A good hard bump with the palm of the hand on the back of the tank is usually sufficient to jolt the tank forward a little, enough to allow an easy clean lift up and out of the tank mounts. Don't think I have rubber grommets in the fuel tank mounts on any of my bikes - so maybe that's why the tank seems to settle back further?

...and once the radio is out, sling it in the nearest skip/dumpster and use the storage space for something useful instead.

I found removing the radio was a complete PITA (it was an after market one fitted by a PO, so perhaps that's why it was more awkward and didn't have the remote controls to make it a useful addition to the bike). Since the left hand glove box is one of the most removed bits of fairing, anything that makes it less hassle, has to be a good thing, in my book.  I haven't missed the radio at all - I get much better audio through the FM radio built into my bluetooth helmet headset...or a choice of MP3 (from the GPS), intercom and telephone connectivity...all from a unit about the size of a matchbox (Cardo Packtalk) with a battery capable of supporting my 12+ hours of weekly commuting entertainment between charges.

That tool for the radio was probably what we knew as a DIN tool, to prevent theft.

I don't see the logic of a big heavy radio cassette unit on a bike anyway....so I didn't have it on my LT!

Yes certainly helps to bump tank forward and pull up,

If the grommets are not there then its because PO had a nightmare getting the tank to slide back into them so removed them , I'm talking from experience Laughing

For gas tanks that are firmly seated in the rear corner grommets I use a piece of 1x4 to pry them up.  Works every time and using wood to pry will not mar the paint.

When sliding the tank back into the grommets, I lubricate with white petroleum jelly.  Or Vaseline to some.  Slips out with hand pressure and is secure once the clip is installed.
