Curiosity question from me!

The shock absorber mounting bolts/studs on all three of my BMWs are threaded for their full length - why is this so?

Thanks in advance to those well informed technical people who can shed some light on this question.

Cheers

A rolled thread is much stronger than a cut thread like JR has said he has. When a thread is rolled the stock starts out smaller in diameter than the thread ends up being. i.e. a 12mm rolled thread is actually around 11.9mm diameter and the stock starts out a touch over 11mm. having a rolled thread just on each end causes problems having a good fit at the centre because the ends are bigger. So to get maximum strength the thread is rolled along the full length and a steel sleeve used to stop the thread tearing the rubber apart.
