Just an early heads-up. Smile

I (as always) enjoyed the Kompany of the Krew in March this year and February last year at our Jindabyne base and in our ride through the mountains.

So I'd like to do it again in 2018. Any takers?

Things to consider:

  • The circuit we rode the last two years in opposite directions may be a bit passé. I can look at a map, but I'd be happy for the Krew to make and/or comment on ride route suggestions as well.
  • It is undeniably more convenient to be based at the same place for the Friday and Saturday nights, but that also potentially limits the ride route. Smithy's Tablelands Kaputar run will give valuable insight re the benefits/inconveniences of this mode. I'm looking forward to that run. Smile
  • There was some discussion whether February or March is the better time. I'm pretty flexible, so I'm happy to take collective guidance.
  • If anyone knows of events that are on in that period that should be kept clear of, please post it so we know.
I tried looking at the BMW Touring Cub of NSW website, but it seems to have been hacked and some pages/links show lots of what looks like Thai script. There also seems to be nothing on the calendar.

  • I'd love to see an international visitor, or even two. I'm sure a bike can be found as required.

Over to you . . .

Bill

Count me in, March would be my preference.
Jindabyne works well as a base, though  I'm just as happy to try new adventures.

I'd like to tag along although I can't commit at this early stage. Its the wife's bday at the start of March and my daughter's bday at the end of March. March is usually a busy month for us but I'll come along if I'm free.

I have finally got my K all sorted and had the first 'proper' ride of a few hours recently. Although I've had my K for almost a year now I didn't want to go to far or use it too much until I inspected and lubed the splines. I finally did this a few weeks ago. I have also put a set of new tyres, new RAM rear shock and RAM progressive fork springs transformed it into a new bike. Wow! Very Happy

She is just waiting for a good run through the mountains....

BMWTCNSW website is in deep trouble at the moment, not hacked just broken.  And in need of a new webmaster at the same time (read: big problems)

Karuah River Rally will as usual be held on the 2nd weekend of Feb, for 2018 this will be 9th-11th Feb.

Howdy Bill mate
I did a run down to Dalgety with a couple of locals here, stayed at the pub and came home over Nimitibell(??). At some spot we could see the ranges over in the distance and they were capped with lots of snow still, beautiful.
I was trying to convince my crew to come home over the top to Tumut, but couldn't as they didn t have proper warm clothes. Must ve been a a late cold snap up there recently.
Count me in next year.

Gaz isn't the only one to describe group riding as like herding cats!  affraid

Like smithy's great Northern/Kaputar ride last weekend, the core of it is the Saturday ride, bookended for this one by camping at Jindabyne on Friday and Saturday nights. The reality is that people have different availability and other commitments, so people will join in when they can and leave when they must. The detail will also be determined by where they are coming from. Sometimes its a case of collecting people on the way, and the group grows as they get closer to the destination.
Some have decided that camping is not for them, and arrange a cabin at the holiday park. I'm happy to coordinate camping, and those who choose cabins make their own arrangements.

Hope to see you there. Smile

Bill

Coming closer to March.  Smile

We'll probably base ourselves at Jindabyne again, but to be confirmed when ride route is determined - which should be around the end of this month.

Looking at the second half of the month, but subject to the collective desires of the Krew. Sat 17, Sun 18 or Sat 24, Sun 25. Put in your two cents worth and we'll come up with a consensus. If its the later one, Rickmeister may be able to come.

Not quite sure what you mean by 'any breakdown', Matthew.  Smile

This run follows a couple of similar runs in the last 2 years. For those, we stayed at the caravan park in Jindabyne, most in tents and some in cabins. Usual arrangement is to meet up on the Friday evening, go for a ride together on Saturday and proceed home on Sunday. There are always variations for any of these gatherings according to what people are able to do and where they are coming from, so we fit in with whatever people want/are able to do.

The ride route should hopefully be determined around the end of this month. Staying at Jindabyne has lots of advantages, so a ride route that starts and finishes there will be desirable, but not fixed until the end of the month.

As before, I'll coordinate camping and those who want a cabin will make their own arrangements.

Depending on your flexibility, there are often people coming from the North half of NSW, and even Queensland. (Victoria and South Oz have been represented as well.) You may wish to arrange to meet some people and travel together for whatever part of the trip is convenient.

I the last two years, people have found that it has been a great trip, in small part due to my organisation and in very large part due to the goodwill and fellowship of the Krew.

Where are your mum & dad?
We don't discriminate, and have been willing to accommodate various bike makes, even Suzuki! (In-joke.) Your dad may like to join us.
My son is in Cooma.

Bill

Can we please confirm the actual weekend.
Is it the 17/18 or 24/25?
It's a long way for me (and Charlie).
The later date suits me as the Barry Sheene festival of Speed is on the17/18 weekend.

OK, now getting very confused. affraid (re Festival of Speed dates)

I seem to remember that the Festival of Speed is no longer officially named for Barry Sheene, but many will still call it that. I suspect some of the younger generation would be "Barry who?"

When I do a search, I find that different venues have different dates for Festival of Speed events.
Phillip Island March 8-11
Sydney Motorsport Park March 22-25
Winton August 4-5
Wakefield Park March 22-25
Can't find one for the March 17-18 weekend.

We don't have an event date set yet, as I was hoping for enough input from the Krew to pick a date that suits the most people.

While I don't ask for a commitment or a promise, if you would be a serious prospect of coming, could you indicate whether the weekend of 17-18 or 24-25 would be possible, impossible or preferred?

Bill

Edit: Andrew got in while I was writing. Very Happy

My guess would be the "Barry who?" factor, thus keeping it "relevant" for the young and the ignorant. Yet we still remember Don Bradman from much longer ago!

Alea Jacta Est.  (the die is cast - see multiple Asterix the Gaul stories)

After doing the most extensive consulting I was able to, the booking at Jindabyne Holiday Park (same venue as before) has been made for

Friday 23 March to Sunday 25 March 2018.

As I did last time, I've made a booking for unpowered sites in a pleasant location near the camp kitchen and amenities, overlooking the lake. Same place as before for those who've been along.
Please let me know in this thread or by PM if you are camping, including which nights, and I'll deal with that part collectively. Cost will be $15 per person per night as before.

If camping isn't for you, please make your own arrangements with the park for your choice of accommodation. Options and prices are on their website https://www.escape2holidayparks.com.au/jindabyne/

The ride route will be to the East of Lake Jindabyne this time, as shown by the map at https://drive.google.com/open?id=1KjryGx8l1GcOoys8R4cFq5koMvLw0vbP&usp=sharing
(Thanks, Garry.)

We'll probably make a small change for the beginning to avoid doubling up and add to the scenic content, but most will be as shown on the link.

A .gpx file is available for those who want it.

Looking forward to good Kompany with the Krew.

Bill

Here's a live link to the map that Bill referred to to save some typing of the URL.

The slight variation might be to go to Dalgety from Jindabyne via Beloka (marked on the map).

Southern Run 2018.

Fantastic, looking forward to it.
In the absences of Rickmeister this year and he's long cut to Jindabyne, I'm thinking we shouldn't brake tradition! I really enjoy the stay at Boorowa and the ride from Tumut across the range to Jindabyne or any other long cut that's on the table.

Don't worry Smithy, there'll be at least a couple of the Hunter Krew on the long cut.

Not sure when Richmeister's boat pulls in but you never know - he could make it.

We'll work on a track south from around here.

Cheers

I'm in.

I can get away from home around 2pm (or 1pm if I leave straight from work).  Friday night is doable now.

Spoke to Rickmeister this morning and it looks as though the boat will return in time for this run. The Boorowa pub stay is looking good with an easy run to Jind. from there.
Cheers Tom

Tom, it sounds like a Loffee meet is required before Rickmeister's boat leaves so we can discuss a route to Boorowa.

Cheers

Smithy,

could you expand on your intended route down to the Snowy Ride (including accommodation stops) for the benefit of a newbie such as myself.
I wouldn't mind tagging along with someone on the way down.

Thanks,

Andrew

Bugga,
I was looking forward to this. Unfortunately I have made plans for the International Festival of Speed on that weekend but if they fall through I'll ride straight to Jindy and meet you lot there.

  Cheers
  Andrew

Good to hear that Rickmeister will be back, lets hope he gets his land legs back by then.
Pegasus, I will be riding down on Wednesday the 21st to meet with the Hunter Krew on Thursday for the long cut to Jindy. We traditionally stay at the Boorowa pub here on the Thursday night.
As Gaz has stated, the route to Boorowa is to be decided over loffee.
You're welcome to ride down with me, as  there could be a few riding down from the north.

Gaz, you are right. A meeting with the Routemeister is definitely warranted over loffee soon. Cheers Tom

Lads!!!  I'm definitely IN (chomping at the bit) How about loffee, Monday 12th of this month, 09:30 at the Maitland info centre.

Keen to leave here on the Thursday, 22nd March. Booroowa sounds great. The ride up the Snowy Mtns hwy from Tumut sounds great.

Will contact RT re: cabin sharing, and make a booking for the Friday and Saturday night.

Also, the ride from Jindabyne to Dalgetty, the back way, to me is much more preferable than going back via Berridale.

Sadly, unable to invite Northerners and others to stay at my joint on the Wednesday night. We will have a full house with our weekly family dinner, it's been a tradition in the Grabau household for many, many years.

Bring it on!!!

(PS, said g'day to a bloke at the start of our street the other day. He happens to have an R1200RT, same year model as mine. Chatted for about an hour. He's just come back from Tasmania, after touring around the island on the RT for 4½ months. Old bloke like me!)

Rickmeister.

Hunter Krew, what are the chances of bringing the Loffee meet forward to Thursday or Friday next week, 8/9 Feb as I'm off for a family visit from Sun 11th until about Wed 21st Feb.

Cheers

Since the Hunter Krew are having a get together this week to discuss a route south to Boorowa it might be time to get some expressions of interest for those thinking of overnighting with us at the pub in Boorowa on the Thursday night (22 March), then one of us can give the pub a heads up maybe next week.
It's very likely that our route will see us lunching in Bathurst, so as happened last year, any Sydney kandidates who might like to run west over the mountains on Thursday could pick up the travelling circus in Bathurst.

Please copy and paste the list and add your name into your replies. I'll start.
