Hi guys,

This is a follow on from my previous post about the same bike exhibiting weird symptoms.

After much hunting, and with my sincere thanks to Peter (the n00bie member), I finally sourced the correct main wiring harness for this police bike, that being 2350600.

Installing the aforementioned went smoothly, and all seemed to be right with the world and therefore the bike, until I tried firing it for the first time earlier today.

At this point every switch produces the predicted results bar one, that being the starter button. When depressed (the switch, not me, although...) I hear the solenoid on the click, but it kills all the lighting.

I should also note, that the gear position sensor is cactus (which hasn't helped with troubleshooting).

My question to you merry band is, what's going on?

Is this problem related to a lack of gear position sensor, or is there something more insidious going on?

As always, thanks for the help.

Cheers, Alex.

Going off my K1100LT......

If you hear the starter solenoid on the click, and all else is working as it should, and you can hear the fuel pump priming, as you say all seems good.

I think you need to look at the battery, the main battery earth, the unfused heavier power/live wiring from battery to starter relay to starter, starter relay and lastly possibly starter brushes. Load shed relay should kill all the lighting when you hit the starter button.

The sidestand switch as far as I recall prevents the fuel pump priming on my K1100, BUT does allow the engine to turn over giving a no start. This switch is known to go dodgy but a quick wriggle underneath can sometimes sort it.

Kill switch seems not to allow priming but also allows engine to turn over.

I haven't checked what happens if in gear and not pulling clutch in but on my K100 engine doesn't turn over on that one so no power to starter relay.

I was without a gear position sensor and neutral light on the K100 for 2 years and just relied on pulling clutch in as I have always done anyway. That meant that if the clutch switch failed I was in trouble but that's an easy fix. I don't think that's your problem because I wouldn't expect the starter relay to energise when you hit the starter button in gear.

If the bike was off road and sitting a long time run a load test on the battery and check it out well.

I think you need to look at the battery, the main battery earth, the unfused heavier power/live wiring from battery to starter relay to starter, starter relay and lastly possibly starter brushes. Load shed relay should kill all the lighting when you hit the starter button. Just so you know, this WAS a running bile when I bought it, albeit the front harness had been chopped by a cafe racer wannabe.

The sidestand switch as far as I recall prevents the fuel pump priming on my K1100, BUT does allow the engine to turn over giving a no start. This switch is known to go dodgy but a quick wriggle underneath can sometimes sort it. I thought of that as well, but it works on the cut out, and re-engages everything when put back in its house, so I'm ruling this one out.

Kill switch seems not to allow priming but also allows engine to turn over. I definitely hear the fuel pump energising and priming, so I'm ruling this one out as well.

I haven't checked what happens if in gear and not pulling clutch in but on my K100 engine doesn't turn over on that one so no power to starter relay. Same as with this bike. I have tried starting with the bike in neutral, but not holding the clutch in, and it doesn't give the solenoid click. With the clutch in, it clicks.

Agreed

If the bike was off road and sitting a long time run a load test on the battery and check it out well. My thoughts as well, which I'm in the process of doing. Let's hope it's just a dicky battery.

Seems like a straightforward enough one...hopefully.

Anyway if its not the battery the only place I can think of is the path of the wiring from battery to the starter relay and onward to the starter motor, through the brushes through to earth. Easier to check out the battery than to pull the starter motor.

Some photos when its done.....

I'll be so happy when this bike is running reliably, indeed, when it runs at all!

It's fought me every step of the way!

I'd be going straight to the starter brushes Alex. Even just a good clean up of the starter but it is very likely the brushes themselves.

I was heading in that direction as well, however, this WAS a running bike about 3-4 months ago...

Everything gives out at some time. Even roosters end up as feather dusters.

Didn't Confucius say that?
