Clutch Release Boot Leak K100RT 20171210On my 1985 K100RT it has a occasional drip of gear oil from the rubber clutch release boot so it gets messy.  This bike has 30,000 miles.  The clutch works fine and I just replaced the clutch cable.  I found on the forum an article listing Service Bulletin 2100689 (2335) which talks about gear oil leaking from the rubber boot.  Essentially it says the leak is generally caused by the clutch free play being incorrectly adjusted.   All that is needed is to remove the boot, clean and replace and correctly adjust the clutch.   Does this procedure generally stop this leak?  Any additional input on this?

You need to be gentle and careful when working with or around the boot, they do tear easily. Check the boot for cracking and tears. If you do need to replace the boot they are available if not a bit pricey. While replacing the boot it is worthwhile fitting a grease nipple to the clutch arm, the occasional greasing keeps it lubed and keeps water and road crap out.
Regards Martin.

I had a light but constant drop of oil under one of my Bricks each time I stopped. I noted a small tear in the clutch release boot and so procurred one from my local dealer - not inexpensive even at a discounted rate (I used to work there). I thoroughly cleaned up the area around the clutch release arm, greased the shaft, adjusted the freeplay, tidied the back of the gearbox of gear oil, sand & etc. All was going swimmingly. The new boot is a bit fiddly to fit. There are techniques but the best one is patience.

Happy with the job I went for a ride and noted a clean drop of oil on the ground under the bike. The bugger insists on marking its territory. It turns out I'd split the new rubber boot on one of the accordian folds as I'd installed it. Stuff that, I'm not buying another new one! Instead I used a thin bead of 3M black weatherstrip cement (part no. 08008) on the crease where the leak was and let it dry for a coupla hours. It's been sealed up for nearly a year now, is meant for rubber, doesn't leak when warm, and the rubbery sealant stays flexible inspite of constant clutch action. It will stick to a dirty boot, but a clean boot is best. It's a good side-of-the-road fix, too. If you insist on the yellow version of gorilla snot, the 3M part number is 08001.

I had a leak there awhile back, even with a brand new boot and the clutch adjustment within a normal range.  I ended up putting gasket maker paste around the openings of the boot and then installing it.  Hasn't leaked since!

I did get the clutch arm release mechanism removed.  Once the clip is removed from the pin, on the right side,  I used a long metal rod to punch the pin out towards the muffler side.  I did not need to remove the muffler, as the Clymer manual says, but did remove the tire, saddle bags and foot peg bracket.  I also had to use a board to pry down on the muffler, just a bit, to get enough clearance for the pin to come all the way out.  See pic.  After cleaning the parts it was clear to see the boot had a big rip in it, allowing gear oil to leak.  It is an expensive little bugger, delivery in about a week.  I did add the grease fitting as recommended.  Clutch Release Boot Leak K100RT 20171211

Good evening all.
Although i have not had this problem the clutch boot can quickly perish as it and arm gets all the road grime thrown at it all the time.
I have made a cover which fits over the clutch arm and round the swinging arm like a large glove.
This catches all the rubbish coming off the rear wheel and keeps that area squeaky clean. I made the cover from a sheet of thick rubber and held it in position with plastic ties.
It has been on the bike since 2012 and done 40k. I remove it once a year for a check all is well and replace it.
So far its done a grand job.

Regards
