G'Day from sunny Western Australia. For those who don't know about Australia's West, we get almost 200 days of sunshine a year, it is bikers heaven!

You would be mad not to own a bike here and I have had many. I used to own a K100LT about ten years ago and loved it. A few bikes later and I now own a pristine 1986 K100RS.

But there is trouble in paradise, I am getting older and the riding position is giving my old back and arms a workout that I could live without!

So I have decided to change the handlebars to RT bars. I have ordered a secondhand set of bars, clutch cable, choke cable and brake hose as the RS ones will be too short.

Has anyone else done this?

Do you have enough slack in the electrical wiring loom to reach the longer bars without cutting and splicing? How is the wind with the more upright position?

If it has not been tried, I will take pics as I go and report on the results.

Hi Bigsax welcome to the funny farm.
The wiring on the switches is long enough but you may need the throttle cable as well all the others.

welcome aboard

rt bars are really a big change ...perhaps a slightly shorter version rise might make a difference ...like the naked or "c" type bar of about 4 inches rise rather than the 10 inch of the rt style

just a thought

Hi Rick. Yes I did order the throttle cable as well and the dash pad.

Hi Charlie, I stand to be corrected but I think the forks may be shorter on the RS by 50mm giving me a total lift of 50mm. I have not put the two side by side so you may be right.

I also thought I might play about with the angle of the bars as well. I mean if you are going away from standard you may as well try everything!

Thanks for the warm welcome.

If you are not sure which way you wish to go with the bars you could try a set of dog bones, most are of the 4inch type and some are 22mm you just grab an old second hand set of bars and use the knurling to fit your bike and cut the rest away stick the bog bones on and use your bars to experiment. Tighten everything up before you consider playing on the road though. You get to find a position and then determine if its c type or rt type that you want.

The most common swap from 'S' bars is to use 'C' bars.

They are virtually the same width and rake as the bars on an RS but a couple of inches higher. They don't alter the look massively, they allow you to use the original cables (but need the brake hose from a 'C' and the crash pad) and don't create clearance issues.

The only drawback is that it's such a common swap that second-hand 'C' bars are getting hard to find.

The problem with living in Perth is that anything you order takes more than a week to get here.

I have been champing at the bit to get on with this job but could not start until today.
it took longer than an hour to get the heated left grip off the old bars, there was some corrosion underneath that really made it difficult. In fact I totally stuffed the grip getting it off. But I live in Perth, I need refrigerated grips, not heated ones Very Happy

K100RS to K100RT Handlebar swap P1040620

Here are the RS & RT bars side by side, about a 70mm lift, really 60mm for me as I used bar risers on the RS bars.

I am going to tackle the cables over the next couple of days, any tips?

One more tip is don't walk out in front of busses it hurts like hell when they hit you. Very Happy

I too have risers on a RS and it is certainly better but even though I was offered a set of RT bars they look so bloody big and may look bizarre on a RS....on the other hand a set of naked bars would be just about right...anyone got a set laying around gathering dust? and besides I may be able to avoid changing all the cables and wires.

I'm running K1100RS bars (wider than K100RS) on 50mm barbacks (50mm lift and 50mm back). They work great on the sidecar in combination with the low K seat. Good bar height, not too much lean forward and good leverage. Have done 1000kms in a day on the sidecar with this combo.
Another mod in this area; I'm running a K75S top triple clamp, the bar clamps are cast in not rubber mounted. With no flex at all the steering is much more direct.

Thanks Al but I think I am getting enough feedback vibration from the bars as it is. Take away the rubber mounts and I recon I would not be able to feel my hands for a week after a decent ride. Have you noticed any increase?

Not really. None of my K100 sidecars have ever had much in the way of engine vibes though. Possibly the attached sidecar chassis absorbs some of it or maybe its because i'm very fussy when I synch the throttle bodies.

Ok, here is some info for anyone considering this.

First off you have to REALLY want to do it!

For me, I had been unhappy with the effects the riding position was having on my arms (I have tendonitis) and I had come to the decision to sell her and buy a K75 C or RT. I even had the old girl advertised and when a guy came to buy her I pretty much talked him out of it! Obviously we were meant t be together.

I got a quote from the mechanic I use to convert the bars to RT bars and it was going to be $1000. Used bars, everything else new.

I am no mechanic but consider myself quite handy with a spanner so I decided to to the job myself. I sourced everything used, bars, dash pad, clutch cable, brake line, and choke cable for about $150.

If you are going to tackle this and you have not done too much before with your K be prepared to give it about 5 hours. Mine took longer but I had trouble with the heated grip.

Put cable ties back on! I thought the cables are tidy enough but they are not for looks. As I found out when the revs go up when I turn the handlebars. (trick for new players)

Here are some pics of the finished job.

K100RS to K100RT Handlebar swap P1040625

The bars look different from the front as you can now see them.

K100RS to K100RT Handlebar swap P1040623

I think they look okay, not too out of place.

K100RS to K100RT Handlebar swap P1040624

I think only people who are familiar with the K bikes would know there is something different going on.

K100RS to K100RT Handlebar swap P1040626

On this last pic you can really see the height of the new bars.

I took her for a 200klm ride and found the following.

The riding position is perfect for me, no strain on my arms or wrists. Also better for my neck. It is so much easier to chuck a look over your shoulder than under your arm!

These positives are great at speeds up to about a ton. At higher speed you do get a bit more of a buffeting. I am over six foot so it is always going to be hard to avoid this unless you have a barn door as a fairing. I adjusted the fairing deflector to the max but still found the wind hit at about my chin level. I am thinking of some sort of mod to the deflector to help with this.

Where I live it is almost always hot and a bit of airflow is actually appreciated. It does make it harder to chuck that vital look over your shoulder though. I have a top line Shoei
Helmet but I still really felt the drag performing this task.

So overall my recommendation for this is, if you use the bike as a commuter and a lot in traffic and not primarily long haul rides, it is perfect. If you are going around Australia on it modify or change the fairing as well.

K100RS to K100RT Handlebar swap Img_5014Obviously the RS fairing is not designed to work with the height of the RT bars.
Maybe the screen Aeroflow was making for the RS is a solution. It almost turned an RS into an LT for screen height.

Yep, I would say for long haul trips get one. Can they have an easy attach and release system?

Yep, a 145/65-15 from the front of a Smart car. Steers very well, no tram tracking at all, good sized contact patch for speed and for braking. I've run a 135/80 before, this is a much better tyre.

All the cable should fit ok. RealOEM part numbers say the cables are the same ones. It's when you swap to RT/LT bars that you get problems.

If your RS has the brake pipe that goes through the steering stem, then I think that you'll need the longer hose.

The RS with the steering stem pipe uses a hose 142mm long. The K75C with the same set-up uses a hose 165mm long.

The RS crash pad is required.

For those following this post, I have sorted out the wind buffeting problem caused by me now sitting higher than the fairing. A Laminar Lip.

I added this during the week and they work! Not as well has having an RT fairing but I think they are a reasonably priced and stylish way to do it.

K100RS to K100RT Handlebar swap P1040630

Also I got from ebay a pair of foam over grips and that deadens the vibrations quite a lot. I also added a pair of wrist rests to help with my tendonitis. This is now a really comfortable ride for me. I love that these old bikes are so well built and undervalued. Taking a spanner to a $20,000 bike is frightening. Taking a spanner to a $3,000 bike is fun!

Hey BigSax, i'm doing the same swap on my 1988 K100RS SE. Can you tell me what brake hose you used? I found the bars, clutch cable, throttle cable and choke cable already.

Thanks

I just wonder if you'd get some benefit from handle bar end weights. They reduce the handlebar vibration especially with RT bars.

Think I'm going to order a BarSnake for my LT handlebars to help with vibration. Anyone know the length of the bars? I can't seem to find their measurements on the net.

2nd that.

Ive got 1100LT bars (entire front end) fitted....including the stock end weights. I have never ridden without them to compare...but I get basically zero vibes through the bars. I also have the rubber dampers in the bar mounts in the triple clamps crushed down real tight (dont just tighten the nuts up in the bar clamps to do this - you must use thrust washers), so if anything this would  increase the vibe level....but as I said I get nuthin!

I actually have aftermarket bar end weights that i purchased for my RS bars only to find out they would not fit on the RS bars. Would they for certain fit with my new LT bars? I'd sure like to have them on there as the right bar end weight is also a cruise control.

After the weekend fighting crosswinds on the RS sidecar and giving my left arm and shoulder hell, I relented and decided to try the RT bar option.  The bike already has LT cables etc, so it was just the bars (which i had sitting in the garage, a no cost experiment).

So I took off the wide 16v RS bars and barbacks I've been using and replaced with the 1100LT bars (still using a K75 top clamp with solid mounts).  Too about 2 hrs all up, i havent wired the heated grips yet. The bike is so much easier to ride its amazing. I don't think my shoulder will complain too much now.  The big test will be in two weeks when we have a camping run to Dungog, the twists and turns of the Putty Road should be enough of a test. The mirrors work better too, i now have a completely unobstructed view.

I'm still not fond of the looks though.

Might to time to try and locate a K100RT fairing I think.

Al

You or anyone else are welcome to the RT fairing bits I have if it helps. Most of it's fallen apart. I ripped it off last week and gone naked.
Most of it is pretty rough if not totally broken but there may be bits that are useful.

I'm going RT to RS.

You need....

K100LT/RT clutch cable, it's longer.
K100LT/RT accelerator/throttle cable, it's longer.
K100LT/RT front brake pipe from the master cylinder to the junction in the down tube.
K100LT/RT spider fairing support mounting if you are changing the fairing.
I think also the K100LT/RT ignition/switch impact pad.

I don't think the LT bars fit the RS fairing.

The RT/LT handlebars are the same.

What I mean is that these may not fit with the RS fairing still on, not sure but I think I saw a post about that. If you get an RT/LT faring you must get the spider bracket for it.

If you have heated grips the bars differ. I replaced the bars on my RT simple because there were very rusted and bought another RT/LT bars so I could repaint them. The new ones were perfect so I put them on. But the new ones were for heated grips and the ends differ. I don't have the heated grips and just cut the ends off. But if you do have heated grips then you need the RT/LT bars for the heated grips.

Be careful doing it because you have to wriggle the electrical connections to get the switchgear to fit, no need to change any of these. But in making the connections check every connection under the tank and test it after to make sure everything works before you refit the tank. Especially the clutch electrical connector......otherwise no start.

Reviving an old thread.  I am looking for a bit of extension from the K1100RS bars but not nearly to the point of the K-LT bars.  I use K-RS bars on my R100RS and they are perfect, but with the longer reach over the tank of the K11RS, not so much.  I have a set of barbacks that have the threaded holes for the dash cover and I also have a set of R90S bars that look like they may be even better.

What other "half-way to LT" solutions have people devised?  I want to generally keep the sport riding position, just a bit less so.  Now is the time to test them as the bike is dismantled for deep maintenance.

Have you checked the R90S's handlebar to determine if there is adequate room for the K11's hydraulics and switches?
