Hi, I’ve run my bike for 15 years and it’s been a great commuter bike. It’s been very reliable and have joined the forum for occasional help and knowledge,

Cheers
Barry

K1100Lt on Hayling Island 177912 Hayling Island - one of only three places where you can catch malaria in the UK. The second place is near Browndown and I forget the third.

Yes, my mother lives in Alverstoke. I was also one of the bunch responsible for building the original seventeenth century replica village at Little Woodham in Rowner. I've no idea how many (if any) of our original buildings survive.

Welcome along Barry - great commuting bike for some quite busy roads around the Pompey metropolis. I passed my bike test at Chichester a few moons ago and Lee on Solent/Alverstoke were my teenage stomping grounds. Went to Hayling Island once but no particular memories of the place.

Dai - I never knew that you had connections with the area. Alverstoke - posh name for Gosport and I know it very well having lived and worked in the area. Spent many a night in the "Village Home" and spent far too much time wandering over Browndown (army firing range) in my youth collecting discarded bullet casings or night fishing from the shore with the Elmore Angling Club. Small world! Never knew about the malaria issue though. I do remember there was an incident where a Pongo (army squaddy) shot at a hovercraft operating offshore and hit one of the crew with a live round and of course have fond memories of the hovercraft trials unit at Lee on Solent and also the time that a Hawker Hunter ditched in the sea during an aborted take off from the airfield....still, this has nothing to do with a K1100LT from Hayling Island!

Welcome and enjoy!!

Still off-topic: there used to be an area of marshland between Browndown and Little Woodham. The mossies gave us so much trouble during the build (actually put one guy and one girl in Haslar with severe reactions to their bites) that we politely asked the Army to come and nuke them. Which they did, with complete malice in the so-doing and with so much firepower that I believe they actually completely wiped out that colony of malaria carriers in two days flat.

Funnily enough, I don't recall supping in the Village Home. It was usually the Cocked Hat or the Wiltshire Lamb or the Still & West. Bit of a bugger running for the last ferry from that one!!!!

At least Barry knows there's more from down there even if we don't live there any longer!! Very Happy
