So the new shed is up. Feels like the Shed Mahal after the two old rattlers with dirt floors that have been here since Moses played fullback for Jerusalem. This is the first time I've been able to put the K bike on its centrestand and have space around it so I can start looking at things. The sidecar fuselage is also up and ready for inspection and work now. It's going to need a fair bit of work too, looking at the bottom of it.
Let the Hi-jinx begin! Periodic Self indulgent and longwinded updates to follow as they occur.

Some progress being made, though I'm still in that stage where you do one job which creates 3 more.
The sidecar fuselage is probably best replaced with a cut down 44 gallon drum a labour of love and requires much attention. I'm on my third attempt to fill all the dents and pinholes and feel no closer to getting a satisfactory result. Well... patience is a virtue they say.  1984 K100RT and DJP Sidecar Project. 447221

still missing on at least 1 cylinder ...you have checked valve clearances ...on the old or early ones  could be tight and not compressing correctly ??? just a guess  old mate  good luck

Hello Charlie, yes I checked the valve clearances and they were all within tolerances. Maybe I should check them again now it's been fired up.
Still a long way to go with the bike but I'm glad to see it runs and the motor seems in good nick.

Sounds to me like it's low on compression on one cyl which is why when you give it a rev it sounds OK but wont idle or start easily.
These things probably suffer from the dry bore that the BMW cars get when sitting. Try some oil down the bore then back in with the plugs and turn it over without the fuel pump going then clean the oil from the plugs and fuel pump back going and see how it goes. If you have the crankcase cover off squirt some oil around the bottom of the bores. It can take quite some time to get oil up into the top of the rings as they are a horizontal bore engine.

I was chasing exactly the same problem last spring.
It started late fall, and once in a while, the bike was cutting off when running. The engine would drop to idle and eventually shut off.
I swapped all the electronic, fuel pump and other bits from my other running K100, but that did't solve the problem.
Finally, after one month I believe that I chased the problem to the inner of the fuel filter collapsing (The fuel filter was quite new).
I am not 100% sure about it, but the bike has been running flawlessly for the rest of the season.

2 years earlier, I had a similar problem and it was the fuel pump. Same thing, bike running and suddenly lost all power but was running well on idle. Stop the bike for 5 min then it restarted and was running well for few thousands of kms.

In Oz we don't see it much but if there is water in the filter when the bike/car is put away for winter the filter material can collapse when it is first used in spring.  Many of the owners of BMW classic cars wont use them when salt is on the road so put them away in a heated kennel for winter.

I put in new plugs and also a new fuel filter as a matter of course.
I also swapped the fuel map puter and coils, leads and fuel pressure sensor.
Smithy gave me a lot of help as he always does.
We also swapped injectors and put in some he had spare from an 1100 motor. This had more of an effect than anything else.
When I get the chance I'll put some oil in the bores etc and look at some other things. I suspect it might be an issue of several small things at once and we're gradually fixing them. I think the motor is good, so it's all positive for me! Smile 1984 K100RT and DJP Sidecar Project. Img_8910

At the current rate of progress I should have it on the road by 2047.
Hopefully I will get time shortly to put the new injectors in, plus the throttle body rubbers Charlie was kind enough to give me.
Will also install new coil leads and might even change the Hall sensor to see if that gets it running any smoother.
New rubber for the sidecar rim.
Too cold to paint here in Guyra now, so the new colours will have to wait until the spring. 1984 K100RT and DJP Sidecar Project. Img_9710

Stan, I think some of the early DJPs had Mini rims. Bloke who put the tyre on that rim also says it's from a Mini. Possibly Cooper S type.

They were called Minilites and were after market rims. Many were put on cop unmarked Minis that roamed around. Strange to think that they were the highway patrol cars of that time.

Were the cop Minis the only ones with dual fuel tanks or did the Cooper S have them too?

Cop minis had a pair of driving lights on the front, but little more to distinguish them. An acquaintance had a standard 998 or 1100 mini which he put similar driving lights on. Lots of people on the road pulled their heads in when he was visible. Very Happy

All DJPs had Mini wheels, so did all HRD Grand Rallies.  If it was a British mag wheel it could be a Minilite.  In Australia it's far more likely to be an ROH Contesta (local copy basically).  I have a Contesta on my HRD.

For that stud pattern there is a 12" wheel from the last of the real Minis that runs a low profile tyre.  I've been trying to get one for the right price for years.  There's also a 13" Moke wheel, but you wont get it under the mudguard.

As an ex-Leyland apprentice myself and having a father that worked for BMC/BL/Leyland Australia from '58 till '76 my brain is full of it Sad
